Zinedine Zidane takes his Real Madrid side to the Basque Country to face Deportivo Alaves on Saturday night. The La Liga champions are back in league action for the first time in two weeks, as they bid to hunt down local rivals Atletico Madrid at the top of the table.
Where and when: Mendizorrotza – 23 January, kick-off 20:00
Where you can see Alaves vs. Real Madrid: Premier Sports
Last time: Alaves sprung the upset when these teams met in Madrid in late November, taking three points home with them following a 2-1 victory at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.
Alaves v Real Madrid Predictions and Preview
They may be second in the La Liga table, but Real Madrid seem to have been in a pickle for most of this season. Despite some recent improvement, Los Blancos remain consistently inconsistent with both their performances and results, with Alaves the champions’ next opponents this weekend.
Deportivo were the last team to beat Madrid in La Liga, with Zidane’s side eight unbeaten since that meeting towards the end of November. However, Real have only won one of their last three in the league. Their 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo was sandwiched by a pair of away draws against Elche and Osasuna.
Madrid also lost to Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup last week, returning to La Liga duty four points behind Atletico Madrid, having played two games more than Diego Simeone’s side. Anything but a win here would be a disaster for Real. They are 4/9 to get one, after keeping three clean sheets in their last four victories over Alaves.

Real Madrid to win to nil
Real Madrid to win 1-0
Benzema to score first
The hosts are 7/1 to repeat their excellent victory of less than two months ago in this Alaves v Real Madrid preview. Abelardo Fernandez’s Babazorros only won one of their seven La Liga fixtures following that victory over Madrid, beating Eibar 2-1 on home soil.
Alaves have an extra day to prepare for the visit of the champions, following Tuesday’s clash with Sevilla. However, Zidane will have the opportunity to rotate his squad in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey tie against lower league outfit Alcoyano.
The Madrid coach has a virtually fully-fit squad to do just that with. Rodrygo is the only player currently sidelined through injury, although the Brazilian winger is expected back from a hamstring problem imminently. Rodrigo Ely is the only player to miss this game for Alaves, who are 4/1 to get a point from this game.
One to watch for Alaves: Lucas Perez is Alaves’s top scorer with four La Liga goals so far this season. One of those was the opener against Madrid a couple of months ago, with the former Arsenal striker 10/1 to repeat the trick by breaking the deadlock in these Alaves v Real Madrid predictions.
One to watch for Real Madrid: The success of Madrid’s title defence rests heavily on Karim Benzema’s form and fitness. The experienced striker simply has to keep scoring if his team are going to retain their league crown, and he is 13/5 to open the scoring on Saturday.
Long shot: Alaves have won two of their last five games against Madrid, beating Los Blancos 1-0 at home and 2-1 away. El Glorioso are priced at 21/1 to win this weekend’s game 1-0, rising to 208/1 with Perez getting the goal.
