Argentina vs. Paraguay Predictions and Preview
Argentina’s quest to deliver Lionel Messi international glory got off to the worst possible start in Salvador. On paper, La Albiceleste have one of the most feared attacks in world football, with Messi, Sergio Aguero, Dybala and Lautaro Martinez comprising Lionel Scaloni’s attack, as Gonzalo Higuain and Mauro Icardi missed out.
The unlucky duo further highlights the embarrassment of riches at the tactician’s disposal and would undoubtedly make the cut for the other squads in the tournament.
Messi is unsurprisingly the overwhelming favourite to open proceedings at 12/5 and 7/2 to bag himself a brace. The Barcelona superstar will line up in attack with Aguero, who is 4/1 to net first and add to his haul of 39 efforts for his country.
In demand midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, who is the subject of a tug-of-war between English clubs Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, is another player to keep an eye on and the Real Betis man is 9/2 in the anytime scorer market. Argentina are 4/9 to claim all three points.
Opponents Paraguay need something from the encounter after their inability to close out the matchup with Qatar. Los Guaraníes remain a useful outfit, with Fabian Balbuena marshalling the defence and the West Ham man will be familiar with facing Aguero.
Further forward, Oscar Cardozo will feature and the veteran is showing no signs of slowing down. The 36-year-old enjoyed seven trophy laden years with Benfica and still has an eye for goal. Cardozo is 9/1 to register first while Paraguay are 13/2 to emerge victorious and the draw is 16/5.
One to watch for Argentina: Angel Di Maria is 6/1 to hit the final goal of the showdown as he nears his 100th cap for La Albiceleste.
One to watch for Paraguay: Federico Santander enjoyed a good season at club level with Bologna and is 12/1 to score last.
Long shot: Argentina need more than the three points at stake, a big performance is required from Scaloni’s under fire troops. Much of the focus will be on Messi, which should benefit the likes of Di Maria, Lo Celso and Rodrigo De Paul from the bench and a 3-0 victory is available at 17/2.
