Aston Villa v Chelsea Predictions and Preview
The hosts are set for a midtable finish and have comfortably improved on last term’s battle for survival. Villa recruited well with Emi Martinez, Matty Cash, Bertrand Traore and Ollie Watkins arriving last summer and a European challenge is a realistic objective during the 2021-22 season.
Jack Grealish has been the standout performer and is good enough to play for any of the top six. The playmaker is admired by Pep Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United are expected to come calling if Paul Pogba leaves Old Trafford. The England international has only just returned from a three-month knee injury and it is no coincidence Villa’s results dropped off in his absence.
|Our Eurotips||Odds||Free bets||Bookie|
|Chelsea to win 2-1||8/1||Offer|
|Olivier Giroud to score last||7/1||Offer|
Gareth Southgate will be a keen spectator as Grealish battles to prove his fitness and the player is an attractive 12/1 to break the deadlock. Watkins, who also harbours ambitions of making the final 23 for Euro 2020 is available at 15/2. John McGinn and Bertrand Traore are 8/1 and 7/2, respectively, to net anytime and Villa are 5/1 to get the win.
In the opposing camp, Tuchel will be without N’Golo Kante after the all-action midfielder limped off during Tuesday’s league clash. Mateo Kovacic will deputise for the World Cup winner and could be joined in the eleven by Hakim Ziyech and Kurt Zouma with one eye on the Champions League final and keeping key men fresh.
Timo Werner has struggled for large parts of the campaign but has still contributed 12 goals and 11 assists. The German attacker is 7/2 to open proceedings and Mason Mount can be found at 17/2. Christian Pulisic is 16/5 to register anytime and a good showing could see the former Borussia Dortmund ace edge out Kai Havertz for a starting role in Porto. Chelsea are 8/15 to come away with the spoils and a draw is 19/5.
One to watch for Aston Villa: El Ghazi is in contention to feature for his country in June and only Watkins has score more in claret and sky blue. The winger is 19/5 to bag anytime.
One to watch for Chelsea: Tammy Abraham has played a bit part role since Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard but was on the bench against Leicester City and could get a run out in the closing stages. The ex-Villa loanee is 6/1 to notch last.
Long shot: Villa are capable of the spectacular, and famously thrashed Jurgen Klopp’s shell-shocked Liverpool 7-2 last October. Grealish and Watkins earned the plaudits on the night and can inflict similar misery on Chelsea if the Blues are distracted in any way by their heavyweight encounter with Manchester City. A 3-1 triumph in front of home support is 50/1.
