Atletico Madrid have moved to tie down Thomas Partey in the face of interest from Arsenal with the offer of a new long-term contract, according to reports.

The Guardian believe the Gunners have made the midfielder one of their top priorities for the summer transfer window and could meet his release clause, which currently stands at €50m. It’s also noted that a number of other clubs are interested in the Ghana international, but it is Arsenal leading the way. No offer has yet been made but Arsenal are said to have contacted Partey’s agent to lodge their interest.

Atletico are however eager to keep Partey at the club and would attempt to do so with a bumper new contract. The 26-year-old’s existing deal runs until 2023, and the fresh terms would extend his stay for two more years and double his weekly wage. Partey is said to currently earn £65,000 per week, and the contract on offer from Atletico would see that figure doubled.

Partey moved to Atletico from Odometah in his native Ghana in 2012, and initially played in the Atletico Madrid B team. He spent the 2013-14 season on loan with Real Mallorca and the 2014-15 campaign at Almeria before establishing himself under Diego Simeone.

Since making his first team debut with Los Colchoneros in November 2015, Partey has made a total of 118 appearances for Atleti, scoring 11 goals. He was a late substitute in the 2018 Europa League final win over Marseille, while 2016 he played the final few minutes of Atletico’s Champions League final defeat to neighbours Real Madrid, replacing Koke for the last four minutes of extra time as Atleti lost on penalties.

A Ghana international since June 2016, Partey has 27 caps and 10 goals for the Black Stars. Three of those goals came in a hat-trick against Congo in 2017, while he also netted in the Africa Cup of Nations penalty shootout against Tunisia, but Ghana were nevertheless eliminated at the last 16 stage. Partey is also a two-time Ghana Player of the year, winning in 2018 and 2019.
