Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona: Who will score the first goal and what will the correct score be?

La Liga serves up a mouthwatering encounter on Saturday night, as Barcelona travel to the Wanda Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid. The visitors are currently top of the table, but Atleti are only a point behind following Barca’s surprising 4-3 defeat at home to Real Betis just before the international break.

Last time: Lionel Messi was the match-winner for Barca when the teams met at the Nou Camp in March, as his first-half strike proved to be the only goal of the game.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona Predictions and Preview

Atletico come into this game looking for their first victory over Barcelona since knocking the Catalan giants out of the Champions League in 2016. Incredibly, Los Rojiblancos haven’t beaten Barca in La Liga since 2010, losing 12 of their 16 league meetings in that time.

The outlook might not look great for Diego Simeone’s side, especially with Diego Costa looking as though he’s going to miss the game. The Spain international has a foot injury, and although he is out of form in front of goal this season, he’s always a nuisance for any opposition.

Luckily for Atleti, Antoine Griezmann has been playing well in recent matches, and has contributed three goals and four assists in La Liga so far this term. The French World Cup winner has his eyes on the Ballon d’Or, and a big goal against Barca wouldn’t do his chances any harm. Griezmann is 5/1 to get the party started on Saturday night.

If you think Barcelona are going to recover from their loss last time out and kick off the scoring, they have a whole host of options to choose from. Leading the pack are Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, who both have nine league goals.

Both players have enjoyed success against Atleti over recent years, with Messi scoring the game’s only goal the last time they met, and Suarez grabbing a late equaliser at the Wanda Metropolitano last season.

In fact, Messi’s free-kick last term was his 28th goal against Atleti, and the Argentine has only scored more goals against Sevilla during his career. That gives Messi the edge here, with Barca’s iconic No 10 priced at 7/2 to score the first goal. If you’d rather go with Suarez, the Uruguayan is available at 23/5.

Although Barca have dominated Atleti recently, they haven’t beaten Los Rojiblancos by more than one goal since January 2015. The away team’s firepower makes them the favourites here, but with Griezmann in good form, Ernesto Valverde’s side will probably have to score at least twice to take the points.

With that in mind, a 2-1 Barcelona victory is priced at 9/1 for Saturday’s hotly anticipated encounter. If you want to add Messi breaking the deadlock in a 2-1 scorecast, you can get odds of 12/1.
