After earning a hard-fought victory in their opener, La Liga champions Atletico Madrid face Elche in their first home game of the new season. Fran Escriba’s men, on the other hand, started with a goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao, but they have never won against Atletico away from home.

Atletico Madrid v Elche Predictions and Preview
La Liga champions Atletico Madrid kicked off their campaign in a perfect manner with their 2-1 victory against Celta Vigo in the first round. Diego Simone’s men had to dig deep, as Iago Aspas’s penalty had cancelled out Angel Correa’s opener, before the Argentinian netted his second to give Atleti the three points.
Typically for the champions, there were some nerves at the end of the game that saw Hugo Mallo from Celta and Mario Hermoso both getting sent off, which means that the Spanish full-back will miss the game against Elche.
Luis Suarez scored twice, including the opener, when Elche travelled to the Wanda Metropolitano last term, so it’s no surprise to see the Uruguayan as the 11/5 favourite to break the deadlock on Sunday.
The champions have won seven of their last eight games against Elche, with the other game ending in a 1-1 draw in the Copa del Rey back in 2017. Atletico Madrid’s last defeat in the league at home was in February, as the champions are currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid to win to nil
Atletico Madrid to win 3-0
Suarez to score first
Elche, meanwhile, finished right above the relegation zone last term and everything points towards another tough campaign for Fran Escriba’s men. They earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao at home in their opener, but have won just one of their last 17 La Liga games on the road.
Remarkably, that was in the final round of last season against Cadiz, with the 3-1 victory allowing Elche to steal the 16th place from Huesca and retain their La Liga status for 2021-22.
Elche have scored just one goal in their last six visits to Atletico Madrid and have conceded a mammoth 17 times during that stretch.
Considering all of the above, it’s not surprising to see the capital club being strong 1/5 favourites against Elche on Sunday. The draw is priced at 5/1, while what would be a shocking victory for the visitors is available at 18/1 in the outright market.
One to watch for Atletico Madrid: Luis Suarez scored twice in the 3-1 victory against Elche at the Wanda Metropolitano last term. The Uruguayan superstar opened the scoring in that game and is 11/5 to do so again here.
One to watch for Elche: Lucas Boye’s seven goals made a huge different for Elche last term, as they narrowly avoided the drop. The Argentinian was his team’s top scorer and is 18/1 to break the deadlock here.
Long shot: Atletico Madrid have scored three goals in their last three home games against Elche, winning two of those 3-0. A repeat of that result is priced at 11/2, rising to 20/1 with Suarez scoring first.
