Atletico Madrid v Porto Predictions and Preview
Although Atletico Madrid won both meetings the last time they were paired with Porto in the Champions League, the clubs actually have a completely even record in this competition. They’ve played each other six times, with two wins apiece and two draws.
That said, Porto knocked Atletico out in the round of 16 back in 2009, courtesy of their two away goals in Madrid in the first leg of the tie, which preceded a goalless draw in the return. The Portuguese outfit followed that up by beating Atleti home and away in the following season’s group stage, courtesy of a 5-0 aggregate score.
The Spanish champions are in much better shape these days though, having beaten Clasico giants Real Madrid and Barcelona to the La Liga title last season. Los Rojiblancos have made a solid start to their title defence, winning two and drawing one of their opening three matches prior to the weekend.

Diego Simeone’s side beat Celta Vigo and Elche before twice coming from behind to share a 2-2 draw with Europa League champions Villarreal. Porto, meanwhile, won three of their opening four matches of the 2021-22 Primeira Liga season, although this game comes on the back of their biggest test to date away to Sporting Lisbon on Saturday.
Porto lost out on the title to Sporting by five points last term, while the Dragons have an incredibly tough task ahead of them if they’re to emerge from this difficult group. Sergio Conceicao’s side knocked Juventus out in the last 16 last season though, so they’re certainly capable of mixing it in Group B.
Even so, the home team are the odds on favourites in these Atletico Madrid v Porto predictions. Los Rojiblancos are 7/10 for the win, while the visiting Dragons are priced at 6/1. A draw would be a more favourable result for the away team, and that’s available at 5/2 with William Hill.
One to watch for Atletico Madrid: Antoine Griezmann is set to make his second European debut for Los Rojiblancos in this Atletico Madrid v Porto preview, having returned to the Spanish capital from Barcelona on deadline day. The France forward is 9/2 to mark the occasion with a goal.
One to watch for Porto: Toni Martinez has begun the new season in fine form, netting three goals in his opening four Primeira Liga matches. The 24-year-old Spaniard could be worth a look in the anytime scorer market.
Long shot: Atletico don’t usually concede many goals. Los Rojiblancos netted twice home and away the last time they played the Dragons, with a 2-0 home win 13/2 in these Atletico Madrid v Porto tips. With Griezmann scoring first, those odds rise to 44/1.
