Atletico Madrid vs. Villarreal La Liga Betting Tips and Preview

Atletico Madrid and Villarreal club crests ahead of their La Liga fixture on October 4

The team that finished last season third in La Liga hosts the team that ended up in fifth this weekend, as Atletico Madrid welcome Villarreal to the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday afternoon. There isn’t much time for either side to prepare following their midweek exertions, but at least both teams are at the same disadvantage after playing on Wednesday evening.

Last time: Paco Alcacer gave visiting Villarreal the lead when the teams met in Madrid in February, but Atletico stormed back to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Angel Correa, Koke and Joao Felix.

Atletico Madrid v Villarreal Predictions and Preview

Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last four matches against Villarreal, winning both of their home games during that run. Los Rojiblancos enjoyed a brilliant start to the new season last weekend, while the opposite can be said of El Submarino Amarillo’s latest result.

The Yellow Submarine sank at the Nou Camp on Sunday, conceding four times in the first half as they went down 4-0 to a Barcelona side in disarray. That was a real disappointment after Villarreal bounced back from their opening draw with newly-promoted Huesca to beat Eibar 2-1 in their second fixture.

Atletico, on the other hand, thrashed Granada 6-1 in their opener, with new signing Luis Suarez coming off the bench to net a brace. The Uruguayan could prove an inspired signing for Diego Simeone’s side, as Atleti bid to reel in top two Real Madrid and Barca this term. Neither of those two clubs are looking in great shape, potentially opening the door for Los Rojiblancos to win the title for the first time since 2014.

It’s very early days for that sort of talk, of course, and Atletico must take care of each game as it comes. There’s a quick turnaround from Wednesday’s trip to Huesca, but Villarreal are in exactly the same boat following their home game against Alaves at the same time.

That probably helps the home team more than their visitors in this game, with Atleti boasting the stronger squad and healthier injury list. Only Jose Gimenez is a doubt for this game, with Sime Vrsaljko expected to be okay.

Unai Emery, meanwhile, could be without, Ruben Pena, Alfonso Pedraza and Sofian Chakla, as well as confirmed absentees Alberto Moreno and Ramiro Guerra. That doesn’t help Villarreal’s case, with the away team priced at 11/2 for the win on Saturday. Atleti are the 6/10 favourites with William Hill, while the draw’s priced at 3/1

One to watch for Atletico Madrid: Luis Suarez began his Atletico career with a bang last weekend, netting twice off the bench in an impressive 20-minute cameo. The Uruguayan is worth a look for the last goal of the game once again here if he’s a substitute again.

One to watch for Villarreal: Gerard Moreno was on target in each of Villarreal’s first two matches, before his scoring run came to an end at the Nou Camp. The Spanish forward is worth a look to score anytime in this game though.

Long shot: Atletico beat Villarreal 3-1 the last time the teams locked horns, and after netting six in their opener last weekend, the hosts are certainly capable of repeating that result here. A 3-1 home win is 14/1 in your Atletico Madrid vs Villarreal predictions, while you could add Suarez and Diego Costa both getting on the scoresheet to really bump up your odds.
