Atletico Madrid v Villarreal Predictions and Preview
Atletico Madrid defeated Elche by just 1-0 in the second round of La Liga, but there were plenty of reasons for Diego Simeone to be happy with the performance.
The champions kept their first clean sheet this term, after conceding in the 2-1 win against Celta in their opener. Angel Correa continued his impressive form by scoring the winner, as the Argentinian had also netted both goals against Celta. Luis Suarez once again came off the bench, as Simeone is slowly building up the Uruguayan’s fitness level for the coming campaign.
Atletico Madrid are undefeated in their last six games against Villarreal, as the capital club have won three and drew as many times during that stretch. Simeone’s men have conceded only twice, while they have scored eight goals against the Yellow Submarine during that stretch and they are once again huge favourites here.
The last time Atleti lost against Villarreal at home was back in 2017, when Roberto Soriano scored the only goal for a 1-0 win for the visitors.

Atletico Madrid to win to nil
Atletico Madrid to win 2-0
Correa to score first
Villarreal, meanwhile, are starting the season slowly, as Unai Emery’s men lost the UEFA Super Cup to Chelsea on penalties. This was followed by two uninspiring goalless draws at the start of La Liga against Granada and Espanyol.
The last time the Yellow Submarine failed to score in two consecutive La Liga games was all the way back in 2018, when they drew 0-0 away to Sevilla, before losing to Girona 1-0 at home. All eyes will be on last year’s top scorer Gerard Moreno, who netted 23 times in La Liga last term, but is yet to open his account this season.
Argentinian defender Juan Foyth was sent off in Villarreal’s opener against Granada is back from his suspension and will be available for the game against Atletico.
One to watch for Atletico Madrid: Angel Correa has scored all three goals for Atletico Madrid since the start of the season. The Argentinian broke the deadlock in the first two rounds against Celta Vigo and Elche, so he will be one of the main men to watch in the first scorer market on Sunday.
One to watch for Villarreal: Gerard Moreno’s 23 La Liga strikes last term raised the expectations towards him. However, Villarreal are yet to score in La Liga this season and Moreno looked somewhat flat in front of goal in the opening two rounds. Despite this, the 29-year-old remains one of the deadliest strikers in La Liga and is one of the main candidates to break the deadlock against Atletico.
Long shot: Two of the last five games between those teams have ended in a 2-0 victory for Atletico. Villarreal are yet to score a goal this year, so a repeat of that results seems possible and is available at 7/1, but you can raise this further if you pair it with Angel Correa to score anytime.
