Two European heavyweights collide in the opening round of Champions League fixtures, as Barcelona host Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp on Tuesday night. If their last meeting was anything to go by, this could be a breathless encounter you can’t take your eyes off.
Where and when: Nou Camp – 14 September, kick-off 20:00

Last time: Bayern absolutely battered Barca 8-2 the last time these clubs met in August 2020. Thomas Muller (2), Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho (2) got the goals for Munich in what was a one-off quarter-final in Lisbon amid the pandemic.
Barcelona v Bayern Munich Predictions and Preview
After some surprise title triumphs last season, the 2021-22 Champions League draw has thrown up plenty of intrigue. A whole host of big teams landed in pot 2, with Barcelona’s failure to win La Liga leading to match-ups such as this against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
There was nothing surprising about Bayern’s ninth straight German title, while this game takes on added significance because of what happened the last time these two elite clubs locked horns. Barca imploded and were totally outclassed by Munich last summer, who will fancy their chances of seeing off the Catalans once again here.
Barcelona are a club in turmoil right now. It could be argued that they’re still reeling from the humiliation of their demolition at the hands of Bayern, having endured a difficult season last term and an even worse summer given Lionel Messi’s exit.
Without their Argentine great, as well as fellow forwards Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann, the Blaugrana are far weaker than they were when Bayern destroyed them little over a year ago. As such, Barcelona go into a home game in the rare position of being the betting underdogs.

Bayern Munich to win and BTTS
Bayern Munich to win 4-2
Over 4.5 goals
Ronald Koeman’s side are 11/5 in this Barcelona v Bayern Munich preview, while the visitors are the 23/18 favourites. The draw is priced at 29/10, which wouldn’t be the worst result for either team in a group which also contains Portuguese outfit Benfica and Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kyiv.
That said, Bayern will be confident of taking the maximum three points from arguably their toughest game in Group E. The Bavarians have begun the new campaign in strong fashion, recovering from their opening draw with Borussia Monchengladbach to beat Borussia Dortmund, Cologne, Bremer SV and Hertha Berlin before the international break.
Die Roten scored a ridiculous 17 goals in those last two fixtures. Even if 12 of those came against lower-league opposition Bremer in the cup, Barca will be wary of their visitors’ potential to put teams to the sword, as they have recently experienced first hand.
The hosts aren’t even helped much by their current injury list, which contains the likes of Jordi Alba, Sergino Dest, Sergio Aguero and Ousmane Dembele. Gerard Pique, Ansu Fati and Martin Braithwaite are further injury doubts ahead of this massive game, for which Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is set to be without Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller, Corentin Tolisso, Marcel Sabitzer and Alphonso Davies.
One to watch for Barcelona: Memphis Depay scored five goals in the Netherlands’ last two World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Turkey, while he also netted in both of Barca’s last two La Liga fixtures before the break. He is 5/1 to break the deadlock in these Barcelona v Bayern Munich predictions.
One to watch for Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandowski is the 13/5 favourite to open the scoring. The Polish hitman turned provider for his country in their last-gasp draw with England, having netted an astonishing 10 goals in his first six games of the season for club and country.
Long shot: Just like the last time these clubs faced each other, these Barcelona v Bayern Munich tips have the potential for fireworks. Over 5.5 goals is priced at 15/2, while a 4-2 Bayern victory is available at 45/1. With Lewandowski scoring first in a 4-2 scorecast, those odds rise to 121/1.
