Barcelona v Cadiz Predictions and Preview

Ronald Koeman has a number of decisions to make after the 4-1 loss to PSG in midweek. The Blaugrana did momentarily take the lead but were outclassed in every department and the scoreline could have been even more devastating if Neymar and Angel Di Maria were available for selection.

Barca now have a mountain to climb in the return-leg and the Dutchman also came under scathing criticism for his decision to rush back Gerard Pique from injury. The World Cup winner was projected to be out for six months but made a surprise return after just 12 weeks and was well off the pace. Pique is likely to sit out the encounter with Cadiz with Samuel Umtiti partnering compatriot Clement Lenglet at the heart of defence.

Jordi Alba, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and indeed Pique, the four pillars of the club, are all in their thirties and there are genuine concerns for the short and long term future of the Spanish and European heavyweights if adequate reinforcements are not brought in at the end of the season.

It has been well documented Messi wanted to leave before the start of the 2020-21 term and the current Ballon d’Or holder is expected to join either Manchester City or the Parisians when his contract ends.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty, the Blaugrana skipper has still contributed 19 goals and five assists from 25 appearances and is 2/1 to open proceedings. Partner Antoine Griezmann is 10/3 in the same market and the final attacking berth will be occupied by Ousmane Dembele. The recruit from Borussia Dortmund is 11/8 to net anytime and Barca are 1/6 to emerge triumphant.

Álvaro Cervera will task Negredo with troubling the shaky Blaugrana backline and the well-travelled hitman is 21/4 to register anytime. Cadiz are a whopping 18/1 to do the double and a share of the spoils is 15/2.

One to watch for Barcelona: Trincão was handed a rare start in the 5-1 thrashing over Alaves and repaid his manager with a brace. The Portuguese starlet is one for the future, but will be afforded more opportunities between now and May and is 5/1 to notch last.

One to watch for Cadiz: Anthony Lozano was on West Ham’s radar as a winter replacement for Sébastien Haller but Cervera held firm. The Honduran hotshot is 15/4 to bag anytime.

Long shot: Cadiz are not in immediate danger, but will nervously look over their shoulder with Eibar and Valladolid steadily improving. A repeat of the shock 2-1 outcome in December is 55/1 and could spell the end of Koeman’s ill-fated return to the club he enjoyed immense success with during his playing days.
