Bayer Leverkusen v Borussia Dortmund Predictions and Preview

Dortmund will be full of confidence after a big win on Wednesday night, and a strong record against Leverkusen in recent seasons. Die Werkself are yet to hit their stride so far this season, and have lost three of their opening five matches.

Bayer did manage a 2-1 win at newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf in midweek, making it back-to-back wins after they lost their first three games. Throw in a Europa League victory against Ludogorets and Heiko Herrlich’s side are looking for their fourth successive win on Saturday evening.

They are 2/1 to get it, which means that the home side start as the underdogs, with Dortmund priced at 8/5. Die Schwarzgelben spanked another newly promoted side, Nurnberg, 7-0 on Wednesday, a welcome goal glut to allay some of the fears over their striking options.

Dortmund have won four of the last six meetings between the sides, although only one of those has come at the BayArena. However, Die Borussen have won 6-2 and 3-0 in that period, along with the 4-0 success in the most recent meeting.

Last season’s corresponding fixture ended 1-1, and another draw is available at 45/17. Considering the teams finished the campaign in a three-way tie on 55 points – with Dortmund claiming Champions League football by virtue of goal difference – there’s a decent chance this game could end all square.

Leverkusen will hope that Charles Aranguiz is fit to play after a knee injury, although Julian Baumgartlinger and Panagiotis Takis Retsos have both been ruled out. Karim Bellarabi is suspended for the hosts, while Dortmund have two defenders set to miss out, Raphael Guerreiro and Omer Toprak.

One to watch for Leverkusen: Kevin Volland opened his Bundesliga account in midweek, and quickly followed it up with a second to hand Leverkusen a two-goal cushion against Dusseldorf. He is 15/2 to open the scoring for the second time in a week.

One to watch for Dortmund: Marco Reus also hit a brace on Wednesday, scoring the second and fourth of Dortmund’s seven goals against Nurnberg. The German international has three goals for the season and is 6/1 to break the deadlock on Saturday.

Long shot: Dortmund’s last victory at the BayArena came courtesy of a 1-0 scoreline. This game could be a closely fought contest, settled by the odd goal, and the visitors are 12/1 to nick it by a single goal to nil.
