Bayern Munich v Cologne Predictions and Preview

Bayern Munich lifted yet another piece of silverware when they beat rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Super Cup on Tuesday night. The Bundesliga is Die Roten’s bread and butter though, as they attempt to win the German title for a 10th successive time this season.

New coach Julian Nagelsmann could’ve done without two dropped points at the very start of his reign, as Bayern came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw away to Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend. Nagelsmann has big shoes to fill following Hansi Flick’s trophy-laden spell in charge, with Munich winning the league by 13 points from RB Leipzig last term.

Cologne did manage to beat Bayern 3-2 in a pre-season friendly last month, but the champions fielded a much-weakened side compared to what’s going to be on show here. Die Roten are unbeaten in their last 14 games against Die Geissbocke, winning 13 of those. That includes each of the last seven, with Munich scoring 22 goals and conceding only four.

The hosts are the heavy favourites in this Bayern Munich v Cologne preview, priced at 2/13 in the latest odds for the game. The away team are out at 21/1 while you can back the draw on Sunday at 10/1. Given their record against Bayern, Cologne would be over the moon to escape the Allianz with another point in the bag.

The Billy Goats began their campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory at home to Hertha Berlin. However, they only survived relegation to the second tier courtesy of a play-off against Holstein Kiel last season and with their abysmal record against Bayern, a draw would be a significant achievement for new coach Steffen Baumgart.

The visitors do at least have an almost completely clean bill of health coming into this game, with Jannes-Kilian Horn their only likely absentee. Bayern expect to be without Marc Roca until late August, while Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard won’t be back until next month.

One to watch for Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandowski has scored in each of his last five games against Cologne, netting a total of seven goals. That includes braces in Bayern’s last two home games against the Billy Goats. The Pole also scored a double in midweek and is the 7/4 favourite to break the deadlock here.

One to watch for Cologne: Mark Uth is out at 20/1 to open the scoring in these Bayern Munich v Cologne predictions, after bagging a brace in the pre-season friendly between these clubs.

Long shot: Bayern have average 3.1 goals per game across their last seven meetings with Cologne. Die Roten have won each of those matches and only conceded four times, with a 3-0 home win priced at 7/1 in these Bayern Munich v Cologne tips. With Lewandowski scoring first, those odds rise to 19/1
