Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich Predictions and Preview

Der Klassiker returns on Tuesday evening, as Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich face last year’s DFB-Pokal winners Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup.

This will be Bayern’s 10th consecutive appearance in the fixture, as FC Hollywood have been ever-present since 2011 when Schalke 04 defeated Dortmund. The Bavarians have won five out of those nine finals, losing three times to the Black and Yellows and once to Wolfsburg.

Bayern won last year’s edition against Dortmund 3-2, as Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Muller had given the champions a two-goal lead before Erling Haaland’s brace levelled the score. Joshua Kimmich’s late winner proved to be decisive, but things have changed drastically since then, with both sides switching coaches.

Hansi Flick was replaced on the Bayern bench by Julian Nagelsmann, who came from RB Leipzig, while Marco Rose took over from interim coach Edin Terzic at Dortmund. It will be interesting to see if those changes will affect Bayern’s recent dominance in this rivalry, as FC Hollywood have five consecutive victories against BVB.

Four of those games saw the champions score at least three goals and ended with over 4.5 goals – a bet that is available for Tuesday’s game at 2/1. Everything points to a high-scoring scenario, as these were the two best attacks in the Bundesliga last year.

The champions scored 99 goals, with Robert Lewandowski netting 41 of those, while Haaland scored 27 of Dortmund’s 75.

Dortmund’s last victory over the Bavarians was back in 2019 in the same event, as the Black and Yellows won 2-0 and lifted the Super Cup thanks to strikes from Jadon Sancho and Paco Alcacer. Both players are not in the squad anymore, as Alcacer moved to Villarreal in 2020 and Sancho left for Manchester United for a whopping £73m.

The good news for Dortmund is that Haaland seems set to remain for at least another year, after main suitors Chelsea secured the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter.

BVB played four pre-season friendlies, winning three and losing only to Athletic Bilbao 2-0 after fielding a very experimental starting XI. Bayern, meanwhile, have been far from convincing during pre-season, failing to win any of their four friendlies so far.

Nagelsmann’s men managed a 2-2 stalemate against Ajax, but lost 3-2 to Koln and were trashed 3-0 against Napoli, right after losing 2-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Despite this, Bayern are firm favourites to lift the trophy and a victory for them, combined with both teams to score can be backed at 2/1. The draw is priced at 29/10, while a victory for Dortmund is rated at 12/5. Over 3.5 goals is another interesting option at 10/11.

One to watch for Borussia Dortmund: Erling Haaland scored two goals, including the opener, in the last game against Bayern. The Norwegian sensation is Dortmund’s player to watch in the first scorer market, as he came third in the Bundesliga top scorer chart with 27 strikes last term.

One to watch for Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandovski topped the Bundesliga top goalscorer charts with an incredible 41 strikes last season. The Pole has six goals in his last five games against Dortmund, including a hat-trick in Bayern’s 4-2 victory in March, so he is the main favourite to break the deadlock against the Black and Yellows on Tuesday.

Long shot: Two of the last three games between Dortmund and Bayern ended in 3-2 victories for the Munich giants. A repeat of that result can be backed at 14/1, but if you are looking for even bigger odds you can pair this with Lewandowski as the first scorer.
