Borussia Dortmund v. Eintracht Predictions and Preview

It’s been a summer of change for both Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, as both sides replaced their coaches and lost some key figures. Both sides meet for their Bundesliga opener at the Westfalenstadion on Saturday in what promises to be an intriguing game.

Dortmund appointed Marco Rose as their new coach, who had spent the last two seasons at Borussia Monchengladbach. The 44-year-old tactician will aim to challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga crown, but this seems like an uphill task, especially after losing Jadon Sancho who joined Manchester United for a reported fee of £72m.

Donyell Malen was brought in from PSV to replace the Englishman and the 22-year-old has plenty of potential. His £25m price tag might seem like a real bargain in a few years, as Malen netted 27 times for the Dutch giants last term.

The good news for Dortmund is that Erling Haaland seems set to remain for at least another year, after main suitors Chelsea secured the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter. The likes of Thorgan Hazard, Manuel Akanji, Thomas Delaney and Hummels performed well at Euro 2020, so Dortmund remain a solid group.

BVB played four pre-season friendlies, winning three and losing only to Athletic Bilbao 2-0 after fielding a very experimental starting XI.

Eintracht, meanwhile, suffered a big blow by missing out on a Champions League spot in the final rounds last term. This led to an avalanche of changes, starting with the coach as Adolf Hutter was replaced by Oliver Glasner.

This was somewhat ironic, as it was Glasner’s Wolfsburg who secured the fourth spot with just one point more than Eintracht last term. Missing on the Champions League money forced Eintracht to sell last year’s top scorer, Andre Silva, who joined RB Leipzig for £19.5m.

Rafael Borre arrived on a free transfer from River Plate and will be expected to replace Silva, but this might be too big of a task for the Colombian, as Silva scored 28 Bundesliga goals last term.

Eintracht won three of the four friendlies they played, but suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat in the DFB Pokal against third-tier side Waldhof Mannheim. However, Eintracht won their last visit to Dortmund back in April and have only lost one of their last five games against their opponents this weekend.

Despite this, Dortmund enter the clash as firm 4/9 favourites to start with a victory. The draw is priced at 4/1, while a win for Eintracht can be backed at 11/2.

One to watch for Dortmund: Erling Haaland finished third in the Bundesliga top scorer chart last term with 27 strikes. The Norwegian scored a hat-trick as Dortmund beat Wehen Wiesbaden 3-0 in their last friendly and is a firm 15/8 favourite to break the deadlock against Eintracht.

One to watch for Eintracht: Rafael Borre scored 10 goals for River Plate last season and will be expected to step in and replace Andre Silva at Eintracht this term. The Colombian’s quickness make him a dangerous customer for any opponent and he is 13/2 to open the score on Saturday.

Long shot: Eintracht won their last visit to Borussia Dortmund 2-1, and you can back another victory for the Eagles at 11/2. If you are looking for even bigger odds you can place a bet for Eintracht to win by the same 2-1 scoreline at 16/1.
