Dortmund v Leipzig Predictions and Preview

Just two points separated these two teams last season, and despite Leipzig holding the upper hand in their head-to-heads, it was Dortmund who secured the Champions League pot of gold. This could be a hugely entertaining game to kick off the new Bundesliga campaign.

Leipzig won 3-2 at the Westfalenstadion last term, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring either side of the visitors’ three strikes. In fact, Dortmund have only beaten Die Roten Bullen once since their rise to the Bundesliga, with Aubameyang hitting the only goal in a narrow victory in February 2017.

There is, of course, no more Aubameyang for Leipzig to worry about now, after the Gabon striker’s move to Arsenal last winter. Dortmund were unable to make Michy Batshuayi’s successful loan spell permanent, with Lucien Favre starting Marco Reus as his central striker in preparation for the new Bundesliga campaign.

Die Schwarzgelben could struggle for goals this season, but they’re still the favourites on Sunday, priced at 4/5 in the betting. Leipzig are available at 7/2 for the win, which would be an excellent way for them to begin their campaign.

The visitors will have to do without defender Marcel Halstenberg and they’re likely to be missing Jean-Kevin Augustin too, who has two goals in his last two games against Dortmund. Marcel Sabitzer is back in training after a groin problem and in contention, while Jacob Larsen misses out for Dortmund with a foot injury.

This game could be quite a close one to call between two sides who competed well against each other last season. If you think this means Sunday’s encounter will end in a draw, you can back that at 31/10.

One to watch for Dortmund: As established, Marco Reus is expected to start this game through the middle for the hosts. The Dortmund skipper only managed seven goals last season in an injury-hit campaign, but he’s 4/1 in the first scorer market here.

One to watch for Leipzig: Timo Werner had a frustrating time at the World Cup in Russia, but he remains one of the hottest prospects in German football. The 22-year-old striker has 42 goals in 77 games for Die Bullen, and is 13/2 for the first goal on Sunday.

Long shot: Leipzig are 37/1 to beat Dortmund 3-2 for the second time in a row at the Westfalenstadion. It would be some way to start the new season, but the lack of match sharpness could open things up a bit.
