Celta Vigo v Barcelona Predictions and Preview

With their top-flight status still very much in the balance, this a daunting fixture for Celta Vigo. Barcelona have been in strong form since the La Liga restart, yet to concede a goal and gunning for another title. However, Celta won last season’s corresponding fixture 2-0, which will give the hosts plenty of hope here.

That said, there won’t be any fervent home supporters inside Balaidos this weekend, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to influence the sporting landscape. That defeat last term was the only time Barca have lost to Vigo in the last eight meetings between the sides, with the Catalans winning on four occasions.

Most of those victories have been big ones, with the defending champions hitting the back of the net 16 times in those four wins, conceding only once. Quique Setien’s side have been superb at the back since returning to action, with their 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday producing their fifth clean sheet in a row.

Celta have also been in superb form defensively of late. Heading into Wednesday’s game at Real Sociedad, they’d only conceded one goal in their previous six matches, which was also their only defeat in eight. Los Celestes thrashed Alaves 6-0 on Sunday, emphatically putting an end to a run of four games where they only scored a single goal.

Barcelona are a different proposition altogether to Alaves though. The Blaugrana have only lost one of their last 10 La Liga fixtures, which came against title rivals Real Madrid. They’ve won eight times during that run, and have the league’s top scorer in their ranks in the form of Lionel Messi.

The visitors are the odds-on favourites to take another crucial three points from the game, priced at 11/17 in the latest betting odds. Celta Vigo are desperate for points themselves with only a small buffer to the bottom three, and they are 24/5 to produce the upset. A point would still be a great result for the hosts, which is priced at 10/3

One to watch for Celta Vigo: Iago Aspas is likely to be the key to Celta’s survival hopes. He has more than double the La Liga goals than any of his teammates, and is 8/1 to notch his 11th of the season with the opening goal on Saturday.

One to watch for Barcelona: With 21 goals and 15 assists to his name in the league so far this term, Messi is showing no signs of slowing down after turning 33 on Wednesday. He is the 3/1 favourite to break the deadlock and cap his week of celebration with a goal.

Long shot: Barcelona have scored 16 goals in their last four wins against Celta, at an average of four per game. Vigo have only scored one in reply, with a 4-0 victory for the away team here priced at 25/1. With Messi scoring first, those odds rise to 96/1
