Crystal Palace v Southampton Predictions and Preview

Roy Hodgson will be buoyed by the form of talisman Wilfried Zaha in pre-season. Despite repeated attempts to leave, the speedster is still at the club and will take his place on the left flank.

Zaha remains on the radar of Everton and Borussia Dortmund and could yet force a move through as the transfer window draws to a close, but in the meantime, will be available for selection and is a mightily attractive 10/1 to break the deadlock.

With Alexander Sorloth surprisingly surplus to requirements, Christian Benteke should start. The burly hitman struck on 24 occasions for Trabzonspor while on loan but Hodgson has sanctioned the sale of the Norwegian. Sorloth is close to joining RB Leipzig and Palace will hope the veteran’s decision does not prove costly.

New recruit Eberechi Eze is in line for a top flight debut. Palace beat off competition from West Ham United for the 22-year-old’s services and there are high hopes for the QPR fan favourite. Eze is 15/4 to mark his bow with the final effort of the contest and the Eagles are 2/1 to claim the spoils and a draw is 9/4.

In the opposing camp, Hasenhüttl will largely rely on the same group of players. Only Jamie Vardy netted more than Danny Ings last season and the hotshot is the 10/3 favourite to bag first.

Ings is deservedly back in Gareth Southgate’s England setup and the attacker featured in the Nations League fixture with Iceland. The former Burnley ace is happy in the South East but Southampton may struggle to keep hold of the Winchester ace if he delivers another 20-goal haul.

James Ward-Prowse also starred on international duty with the Three Lions and is the new captain following Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s departure. The versatile midfielder is particularly threatening at set-pieces and is 15/4 to score anytime. A successful away day is 11/8.

One to watch for Crystal Palace: Luka Milivojevic has contributed double figures in two of his four seasons at Selhurst Park, largely from the penalty spot, and is the main beneficiary of Zaha’s trickery in the box. The Serbian is 9/2 to notch anytime.

One to watch for Southampton: Saints play 4-4-2 and Che Adams was brought in to partner Ings. The ex-Birmingham City hotshot has looked sharp in friendlies and is 13/2 to register first.

Long shot: Southampton and, indeed, Hasenhüttl, deserve credit for how they recovered from the 9-0 humiliation they suffered at the hands of Leicester City. The Austrian was expected to be relieved of his duties but turned things around and Saints were one of the most impressive teams when the campaign resumed. A 3-1 outcome in favour of the travelling party is 22/1.
