Celtic are finally back in domestic action as they travel to Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership this weekend. The Bhoys have had their last two matches postponed due to coronavirus protocol transgressions, so they’ll be chomping at the bit against the newly-promoted Terrors in Saturday’s late kick-off.

Where and when: Tannadice Park – 22 August, kick-off 17:30

Last time: Celtic eased to a 4-1 victory when the teams last met each other, which was also at Tannadice back in 2016.

Dundee United v Celtic Predictions and Preview

Dundee United have made a solid start to their season after returning to the top flight, but Micky Mellon and his players face the ultimate test this weekend. Celtic have won each of the last seven meetings between these clubs, even if those matches all took place in 2015 and 2016.

The Hoops are fresh and raring to go after another enforced break, while Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over Icelandic minnows KR Reykjavik in a Champions League qualifier at Celtic Park should be good for their fitness and match sharpness.

That’s not good news for Dundee, but the Terrors can take confidence from their own form after only losing one of their opening four fixtures, a narrow 1-0 defeat against Hibernian. Mellon’s side have beaten Motherwell and Ross County on the road, drawing their other game against St Johnstone.

The Tannadice outfit held a commanding 14-point lead at the top of the Scottish Championship when Scottish football was called off back in March, albeit having played a game more than Inverness. They look like they have the quality to make a real fist of staying in the top flight having last featured in it back in 2015/16, but that may not be enough on Saturday.

Celtic are a cut above every other side in the division, even if they dropped points in their last league game in drawing 1-1 at Kilmarnock earlier this month. The Bhoys thrashed Hamilton 5-1 on the opening day of the season, and they are the heavy favourites for the win here at 3/11. Dundee are out at 12/1, with the draw priced at 5/1

One to watch for Dundee United: Nicky Clark scored a late winner for Dundee in their last game against Ross County, his second of the season after breaking the deadlock from the penalty spot in his team’s opener against St Johnstone. He is worth a look for the first goal again here, although the anytime market looks likelier for a payout.

One to watch for Celtic: Odsonne Edouard is likely to be a better bet for the first goal, after he netted a hat-trick in Celtic’s first game of the season. The France Under-21 international bagged 28 last season, before the Scottish campaign ended early due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Long shot: Celtic have scored 22 goals in their last six matches against United, at an average of 3.7 per game. The Terrors have only scored twice during that run, although they were on target in two of the last three meetings. Celtic won 4-1 the last time the teams met, and a repeat of that scoreline here is priced at 17/1 in the latest odds for this game.
