La Liga champions Atletico Madrid return to action after the international break with a trip to the RCDE Stadium to face Espanyol. Diego Simeone’s side don’t have a great record against Los Periquitos, so this trip to Catalonia to play the newly-promoted Blanquiazules is no gimme.

Espanyol v Atletico Madrid Predictions and Preview
Atletico Madrid are looking for their first win in four visits to the RCDE Stadium when they head to Barcelona on Sunday afternoon. Espanyol have won three of the last six meetings between the clubs and also managed a draw against the champions the last time they were in La Liga the season before last.
That said, Atletico have made a solid start to the 2021-22 season, winning the first two matches of their title defence away to Celta Vigo and at home to Elche, before drawing 2-2 with Europa League winners Villarreal in their last fixture before the break. Los Rojiblancos were far from their best against the Yellow Submarine, but twice came from behind to eventually claim a draw in the 95th minute.
Simeone will be keen for his team to be more composed and in control of this game against a newly-promoted side. Especially considering Espanyol are yet to score a single goal so far on their return to the top flight. Despite that, Los Periquitos still have two points to their name, having drawn 0-0 away to Osasuna and at home to Villarreal, prior to a 1-0 defeat away to Real Mallorca.

Atletico Madrid to win to nil
Atletico Madrid to win 1-0
Griezmann to score first
Vicente Moreno has got his team well organised and compact, and they will make this Espanyol v Atletico Madrid preview difficult for their visitors. Claiming their first victory of the season will be very tough against the champions though, with the home win priced at 10/3 with William Hill. The hosts’ task isn’t made easier due to the absence of the suspended Sergi Gomez, with Adria Pedrosa and Yangel Herrera also injury doubts.
Atleti are set to be without Luis Suarez until next month, although that injury problem is mitigated by the return to the club of Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona. He’s set for his second debut in this game, although Hector Herrera is out and Thomas Lemar is a doubt. The visitors are the even money favourites for the win on Sunday, while the draw is priced at 27/11.
One to watch for Espanyol: Raul de Tomas had a superb season in the Segunda last season, scoring 23 goals in 37 appearances to fire Espanyol to the title and automatic promotion. He is 13/2 to open his account for the new campaign by breaking the deadlock on Sunday.
One to watch for Atletico Madrid: All eyes will be on Antoine Griezmann following his shock return to Atletico at the end of the transfer window. The Frenchman scored 133 goals in 257 games during his first spell at Los Rojiblancos, and he is 5/1 to open the scoring in these Espanyol v Atletico Madrid predictions.
Long shot: Atletico’s last win away to Espanyol was a 1-0 victory in April 2017. Given the home team are yet to score so far this season but have only conceded once at the other end, the same result this weekend could be on the cards at 5/1 in these Espanyol v Atletico Madrid tips. With Griezmann scoring the goal, those odds rise to 35/1.
