The new Premier League season is upon us, with Everton and Southampton locking horns at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are desperate for a good start following somewhat tumultuous summers at the clubs.

Where and when: Goodison Park – 14 August, kick-off 15:00

Last time: An early Richarlison goal was enough to hand Everton a 1-0 victory when they hosted the Saints at Goodison in March.

Everton v Southampton Predictions and Preview

This has been a relatively even fixture over recent years, with both sides winning their home game against the other last season. The 10 most recent Premier League meetings between the clubs have produced four wins apiece and two draws, with both stalemates coming at Goodison Park.

Each of those matches finished 1-1, with a repeat of that scoreline this weekend priced at 7/1. Everton are still reeling from the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, although they have potentially pulled a blinder by appointing Rafa Benitez as their new manager.

The Spanish tactician has a job on his hands to convince the Goodison faithful of his allegiances following his stint as Liverpool boss, but there’s nothing like a string of victories to persuade football fans of your merits. Having shown his love for Merseyside after continuing to live in the area since his Liverpool days, a good start should be all Benitez needs to convince the naysayers of his worth.

The hosts are the 19/20 favourites to get the win in this Everton v Southampton preview, although their summer signings have hardly set tongues wagging thus far. Former Leicester City winger Demarai Gray has arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, while Andros Townsend joins on a free from Crystal Palace.

The transfer market has been far more unkind to the visiting Saints, however. Ralph Hasenhuttl has lost his main man, Danny Ings, who was sold to Aston Villa with only a year to run on his contract. Southampton need to replace his goals and energy up front, and fast.

Theo Walcott’s loan spell from Everton last season has been turned into a permanent transfer on a free, while left-back Roman Perraud and former Chelsea youth player Valentino Livramento boost numbers. The Saints are crying out for goals though, having finished down in 15th last term.

The away team are the 16/5 underdogs in the betting, while a draw at 14/5 would be seen as a positive result for the Saints. The south coast side haven’t managed a league win at Goodison since 1997 though, losing on 11 of their 16 visits in the intervening years.

One to watch for Everton: James Rodriguez faded in the second half of last season after a bright start on Merseyside. Benitez needs to figure out how to get the best out of the Colombian, who could be worth a punt at 15/2 in the opening goalscorer market in these Everton v Southampton predictions.

One to watch for Southampton: Che Adams played in all three of Scotland’s matches at this summer’s Euro 2020. He only managed nine goals in 42 appearances in all competitions last season, and must improve on that this time round. He is 8/1 to start in the right vein by netting the opener here.

Long shot: Everton have scored exactly one goal in each of their last three home games against Southampton in all competitions. With Benitez at the helm, Toffees supporters may expect low-scoring matches, with a 1-0 home win priced at 13/2 in these Everton v Southampton tips. Those odds rise to 41/1 with Dominic Calvert-Lewin getting the goal.
