Freiburg v Bayer Leverkusen Predictions and Preview

Christian Streich’s men have enjoyed a fine year despite losing three of their last six fixtures. The tactician has no fresh injuries in the ranks with Höler and Nils Petersen expected to lead the line. The duo have contributed 18 goals between them and both offer real physical presence up top.

Petersen has eight efforts and two assists to his name and, after numerous spells elsewhere, is finally settled. The striker is in his sixth full season in the South-West made his debut for the national team in 2018.

Petersen is 15/2 to open proceedings and along with his partner, will be a real handful for the Bayer backline. Freiburg are 4/1 to emerge triumphant and the draw is 11/4.

Elsewhere, Leverkusen followed up their success over Bremen with a 3-1 result against Borussia Monchengladbach. Kai Havertz was once again the star of the show and has four strikes from his last two showings.

The Bayer prodigy is admired by every giant in Europe and is flourishing in an unfamiliar centre-forward role. A playmaker by trade, Havertz has brought fluidity to the front line, and is a different prospect to conventional forwards Lucas Alario and Kevin Volland.

The 20-year-old is 4/1 to net first and 7/2 to hit a third brace in as many matches. Team-mate Diaby, admired by English outfit Arsenal, is 9/4 in the anytime market. Bayer are 7/10 to come away with the spoils and maintain the pressure on Red Bull Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund.

One to watch for Freiburg: Gian-Luca Waldschmidt averages one in three, largely from the bench, and will get minutes in the second-half. The attacker is 13/5 to bag anytime during the encounter.

One to watch for Bayer Leverkusen: Alario may not be a regular in the starting eleven but is still an asset. The Argentine, a burly figure, has six goals from 19 appearances and is 5/1 to strike last.

Long shot: Freiburg have been leaky of late, while Bayer have been at their irresistible best going forward. Streich won’t be overawed by the free scoring opposition, though, and will remind his group they are also in European contention. An exciting 2-2 outcome is 13/1.
