Hibernian v Motherwell Predictions and Preview

These two teams have enjoyed polar opposite starts to the season, with Hibernian one of the early pacesetters and Motherwell without a point ahead of the midweek round of fixtures. The question ahead of this game then, is whether the away team can reverse their fortunes and start putting some decent points on the board by upsetting the odds and claiming the win.

If Hibernian’s start is anything to go by, that’s going to be a very tall order indeed. Hibs kicked off their season by beating Kilmarnock 2-1 on home soil, before thrashing Livingston 4-1 in their own backyard. Tuesday’s trip to newly-promoted Dundee United provides them with the perfect opportunity to maintain their 100% record at the dawn of this new campaign.

Motherwell, on the other hand, are just looking to put a stop to this early season rot. The last campaign may be asterisked by the intervention of the coronavirus pandemic, but the Well’s third-placed finish still represents their best season since they secured back-to-back second-placed finishes in 2013 and 2014.

Stephen Robinson needs to get his players performing like they did for the majority of last term, and quickly. These are unprecedented times right now, and no club can afford to take any chances should there be another cancellation. It’s still very early days in the season for that kind of talk of course, but the fact remains that the Dossers must steer clear of that particular nickname.

Better the Steelmen show their mettle, although recent meetings between these teams suggests home form is crucial. The draw in their last clash ended a run of six straight home wins in the fixture, with Hibs victorious in four of those and Motherwell in two. That said, this match will be played under very different circumstances, as there won’t be any supporters inside Easter Road on Saturday.

While that should only help Motherwell more than Hibs, there’s no doubt Jack Ross’s side have made the better start to the campaign. They are the betting favourites to pick up the win on Saturday, and as the away team has failed to score in this fixture in five of the last meetings between these sides, backing Hibs to win to nil with William Hill could be a great option on your betting slip this weekend.

One to watch for Hibernian: Kevin Nisbet has certainly made an impression during his first few weeks as a Hibs player, bagging a hat-trick in his new team’s excellent victory away to Livingston last weekend. That included the opening goal, and Nisbet is well worth a look to break the deadlock once again here.

One to watch for Motherwell: Prior to the Well’s midweek game against Livingston, Chris Long had scored their most recent competitive goal all the way back in early March, in a 1-1 draw at Hearts. No Motherwell player scored more times than Long last season, and he’s worth a look in the first goalscorer market if you think the Well will find the net first on Saturday.

Long shot: Hibs have scored 10 goals in their last four home games against Motherwell, at an average of 2.5 per game, conceding only two. We’re backing the home team to win to nil, so the question is whether we tip them to win 2-0 or 3-0. Considering their fine goalscoring start to the season and their big win against Livingston last weekend, we’re leaning towards 3-0, while you can add Nisbet to that for a scorecast with even bigger odds.
