Chelsea are looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at Newcastle last weekend when they travel to Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup on Saturday. Frank Lampard’s Blues start as the heavy favourites, even after an additional midweek assignment against Arsenal on their hands.

Where and when: KCOM Stadium – 25 January, kick-off 17:30

Last time: These clubs last met in February 2018, when Chelsea scored all of their goals in a 4-0 victory in the first half of the FA Cup fifth round fixture between the sides.

Hull v Chelsea Predictions and Preview

Chelsea come into this FA Cup fourth round tie having never lost to Hull City in the Premier League era. The Tigers last beat the Blues in the old Division Two back in 1988, with Chelsea winning 13 of their 15 meetings since.

The west London outfit kept a clean sheet in the last three of those victories, thanks to a pair of 2-0 wins when Hull were last in the top flight during the 2016/17 campaign. In fact, Chelsea have won six of the last seven meetings between the sides to nil, with five of those finishing 2-0 to the Blues.

Considering Lampard is expected to make a few changes this weekend, and Hull are at home, that bet could be well worth a look here. The Tigers are down in 12th place in the Championship, five points off the play-offs, and have lost both of their last two matches 1-0 to Fulham and Derby County.

Grant McCann’s side will hope to have a say in this game after beating Rotherham 3-2 away from home in the third round, but they’ll have to do without the injured Kevin Stewart and Jon Toral. Stephen Kingsley and Angus MacDonald also miss the visit of the team currently lying fourth in the Premier League table.

Chelsea are experiencing something of a stop/start season, which is to be expected of such a young side. Lampard noted the need for better finishing after seeing his side draw a blank against Newcastle last weekend, going on to lose 1-0 at the death despite enjoying 70% of the possession.

The Blues boss is set to be without Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for this game, although Reece James should be fit and could start. Even if the away team take the opportunity to rotate some players just before the Premier League’s winter break, Chelsea will still have enough to get the job done. The visitors are the 1/2 favourites for the win, while Hull are 6/1 and the draw is 19/5

One to watch for Hull: Top scorer Jarrod Bowen, who already has 17 goals this season, has attracted serious interest from Newcastle during the January transfer window. The 23-year-old is 15/2 to add to his growing reputation by netting the opener here.

One to watch for Chelsea: Michy Batshuayi is expected to lead the line for Chelsea, and the Belgian has managed 13 goals in 19 domestic cup games for the Blues. He is 7/2 to break the deadlock this weekend.

Long shot: Hull’s last victory over Chelsea was a 3-0 win at Boothferry Park in the second tier back in October 1988. If the Blues ring the changes on Saturday, could we be in for a repeat of that result at 110/1
