Inter Milan have been linked with Arturo Vidal in the latest transfer news, with Bayern Munich reportedly open to selling the Chilean midfielder. If he heads to the San Siro, Vidal would spearhead a fresh new start at the heart of the Nerazzurri team.
Luciano Spalletti has already secured the services of Radja Nainggolan this summer, who’s joined from Serie A rivals Roma. With Joao Mario set to leave the club after spending the second half of last season on loan in the Premier League with West Ham, it seems that the Inter manager is in the market for another big name.
Vidal’s arrival would certainly be welcomed by the club’s supporters, as well as some of their former players. Nicola Berti – who patrolled Inter’s midfield for a decade before moving to Tottenham in 1998 – said this week that signing Vidal would turn the Nerazzurri into a “super team”, and give them a great chance of winning the Serie A title.
“I love him as a player,” Berti said. “He likes to score goals, he runs his heart out and he fights for every ball. He’d give Spalletti’s side a lot both as a player and as a leader. With Vidal we’d become a serious challenger to Juventus, I can assure you, and we’d be able to fight for the Scudetto, although I hope Inter can have a good season in the Champions League as well.”

Bayern are thought to be willing to let Vidal go on an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer, but the path to his signature might not be quite as clear as Inter hope. There have been rumours flying around that Barcelona have entered the race for Vidal, as they look to replace two departing midfielders. Club stalwart Andres Iniesta has left for pastures new in Japan, while Brazil international Paulinho has moved back to China.
If Vidal slips through Inter’s grasp, then the Milanese side seem to already have another option on the boil. Reports have linked them with Real Madrid maestro Luka Modric, who had a phenomenal World Cup this summer. He won the Golden Ball award after leading Croatia to an unlikely appearance in the final, and is rumoured to be open to a move away from the Bernabeu.
Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Modric’s wife, Vanja Bosnic, called Inter and asked them directly if they wanted to sign her husband. As unlikely as that detail seems, Inter are believed to have been in touch with Modric’s representatives with a view to a move. Although he’d expect a wage of around £150,000 a week, Inter hope that they can secure an initial loan deal for the 32-year-old, who would represent a major coup for the Nerazzurri after the summer he’s just had.
It’s this interest in Modric that appears to have cooled their desire to land Vidal, but Inter are playing a dangerous game if Vidal heads to Barcelona and the Modric deal fails to materialise. Although the Nerazzurri faithful will be pleased to see their team linked with talented players like this, they won’t be happy if both midfielders slip through their fingers as Spalletti looks to revitalise his options in the middle of the park.
