Inter v Genoa Predictions and Preview

It was a rare off day for strike pairing Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez in the draw with Fiorentina. The duo have a whopping 25 goals between them, plus a further three assists, and will be raring to go against a leaky defence prone to gifting chances.

Martinez, in particular, has shone this year replacing Mauro Icardi after the ex-skipper’s acrimonious departure to PSG last summer, but fortunately for Genoa, the South American will miss out through suspension.

Lukaku is the 10/3 favourite while Inter are 1/3 to chalk up the win and maintain the pressure on Juventus at the top.

After just nine matches in charge, Thiago Motta is reportedly close to being dismissed as Genoa Head Coach. The former Italy international enjoyed a storied playing career, winning numerous honours with Barcelona, PSG and opposing squad this weekend, Inter.

Motta won the treble with the Nerazzurri in 2010 and is fondly remembered in the terraces, but the outcome of the clash with Antonio Conte’s troops could spell the end for his first managerial stint.

Genoa have struggled since top scorer Christian Kouamé damaged his knee ligaments in mid-November and the Ivorian is not expected back during the current campaign.

Andrea Pinamonti, Antonio Sanabria and Goran Pandev have all been given chances upfront but the trio have so far been unable to steer the Grifone out of the bottom three. Genoa are 8/1 to emerge victorious, potentially saving the Brazilian born tactician’s job in the process, and the draw is 17/4.

One to watch for Inter: Matteo Politano is not an orthodox centre-forward but Conte has limited options beyond Lukaku and Martinez which has afforded the winger chances through the middle. Politano, who is expected to come in for the Argentine, is 11/2 to score last.

One to watch for Genoa: Andrea Favilli has immense physical presence and is an option given the size of the Inter backline. The 23-year-old, who was on Juventus’ youth books before moving to the Grifone last year, is 12/1 to register last.

Long shot: Only Lecce have conceded more goals than Genoa and there are genuine problems at both ends of the pitch for Motta. In contrast, Inter have shipped the least in Italy’s top flight and Conte will expect nothing less than three points after uncharacteristically failing to hold on against Fiorentina. A repeat of April’s scoreline is 19/1.
