Juventus vs. Sampdoria, Serie A

Juventus are looking to continue their march towards a ninth straight scudetto when they welcome Sampdoria to the Allianz Stadium on Sunday night. This isn’t the top-of-the-table blockbuster affair of yesteryear, but can the visitors upset their old rivals this weekend?

Last time: Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner for Juve when the teams met at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris when the teams met in December for their final fixture before the winter break.

Juventus v Sampdoria Predictions and Preview

Ronaldo got the winning goal the last time these teams met, and the Portuguese has been in sensational form since the restart. With the mercurial forward in their midst and with personal targets at the forefront of his mind, Sampdoria could be in for a very difficult night against Juventus in Turin.

The Old Lady are easing their way to an unprecedented ninth successive Serie A title, with last week’s 2-1 victory over Lazio proving a mighty blow to the chasing pack. That game ended a run of three matches without a win for Maurizio Sarri’s side, but Juve’s listing ship was righted against the Biancocelesti.

Ronaldo scored twice in the second half to break the 30-goal barrier in a domestic league season for the first time since 2016, also putting him ahead of Ciro Immobile as Serie A’s top scorer. Immobile, however, netted a late consolation from the penalty spot to haul himself back level, but there’s no doubt Ronaldo will be fired up to increase his tally this weekend.

Scoring goals hasn’t been an issue for Juventus this season; their problems have mainly been at the back. The Bianconeri have already conceded 36 goals this term, which is their worst defensive record in many years. They only let in 30 across the whole of last season and 24 the year before, while 2015/16 saw the Old Lady concede just 20 goals.

It’s an issue Sarri must address before the Champions League resumes next month, with Juve trailing Lyon 1-0 following the first leg of their last-16 tie which took place before the coronavirus outbreak. Even so, the home team are the overwhelming favourites for the win in this game, priced at 1/4

Sampdoria are out at 12/1, as they look for their third win in six against Juventus. The Blucerchiati certainly have a better record against Juve than other mid-table teams, with Claudio Ranieri’s side 11/2 to pick up a positive result by taking a point back to Genoa with them.

La Samp have been on a good run this month, winning five of their first six matches in July, including each of their last three ahead of their derby against Genoa on Wednesday. They’ll have to do without Felice D’Amico here though, as the youngster is out with a broken foot.

Juve, meanwhile, are expected to be without Giorgio Chiellini, Mattia De Sciglio and Sami Khedira through injury. Gonzalo Higuain is also a slight doubt, while Leonardo Bonucci returns from suspension to bolster that suspect Juventus defence.

One to watch for Juventus: Cristiano Ronaldo is a man on a mission, and ageing like a fine Piedmonte wine. He’s reached the 30-goal mark in a league season for the eighth time in his career, and the Portuguese is the favourite to break the deadlock here.

One to watch for Sampdoria: Fabio Quagliarella has also proven that age is just a number in recent seasons, backing up last term’s 26-goal haul with another 11 from his first 24 appearances so far this term. He could also be worth a look in the first goalscorer market for this game.

Long shot: Juventus have won each of their last four home games against Sampdoria, scoring 14 goals and conceding only two. A Juve win and over 3.5 goals is proved at 13/8 this weekend, while the hosts are 14/1 to win 4-0. If you add Ronaldo as the first scorer, your odds will be boosted significantly.
