Leganes vs. Real Madrid, La Liga

Real Madrid are La Liga champions once again, and they travel to Butarque on Sunday for a victory lap against Leganes. Los Blancos received their trophy on Thursday, so will the visitors already be on the beach for this game?

Where and when: Estadio Municipal de Butarque – 19 July, kick-off 20:00

Last time: Madrid spanked Leganes 5-0 when the teams met at the Bernabeu in late October, with Rodrygo, Toni Kroos, Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema and Luka Jovic all on target.

Leganes v Real Madrid Predictions and Preview

The three-year wait is over, after Real Madrid claimed their 34th La Liga title with a 2-1 victory over Villarreal on Thursday. Barcelona’s defeat at home to Osasuna means Los Blancos now have an insurmountable seven-point lead going into the final day of the season, but the home team still have it all to play for.

Leganes recorded a massive 2-0 win away to Athletic Bilbao in midweek, with both goals coming inside the final 11 minutes. Celta Vigo’s tempestuous 3-2 defeat to Levante means Leganes are now just a single point behind Celta, although they need to beat Madrid to stand any chance of continuing their four-year stay in the Spanish top flight.

The hosts are the 21/10 underdogs to do just that, with their price certainly helped by the fact their visitors on Sunday are no longer playing for the league. Madrid are only the 6/5 favourites for the win, with the draw priced at 11/4. Under normal circumstances, Zinedine Zidane’s side would be much shorter in the odds.

Los Blancos have a wonderful record against Leganes, winning six of the seven La Liga meetings between the sides since Los Pepineros were promoted to the first tier in 2016. Leganes have had some success against Real in the Copa del Rey since then though, beating them 2-1 at the Bernabeu in 2018, and 1-0 at this ground last year. And Madrid’s easy victory earlier this season was the first time they’d kept a clean sheet against Leganes in six La Liga meetings.

Considering this is basically a cup final for the home team, they could be worth a punt for the upset, especially as Madrid have nothing riding on the game. Indeed, Zidane may even be tempted to give some of his squad players a run-out with an eye on the resumption of the Champions League next month.

That could mean a start for Gareth Bale, who received even more strange criticism from some quarters for his behaviour during Real’s title celebrations on Thursday. The Welshman needs more minutes, although with Marcelo the only Madrid player currently injured, he may struggle to get them here.

Leganes coach Javier Aguirre, meanwhile, will definitely be without midfielder Alexander Szymanowski. Four players are in a race to be fit though, with Guido Carrillo, Kenneth Omeruo, Kevin Rodrigues and Oscar Rodriguez all rated as doubtful for this crucial clash.

One to watch for Leganes: Miguel Angel Guerrero scored the first goal of his loan spell back at Leganes when he came off the bench to net the opener against Bilbao last time out. That was a monumental strike for Los Pepineros, and Guerrero is 16/1 to follow that up with another massive deadlock-breaking goal on Sunday.

One to watch for Real Madrid: Karim Benzema hit a title-winning brace against Villarreal on Thursday, even if he and Sergio Ramos contrived to mess up their attempt at completing a pass penalty. The Frenchman has 21 La Liga goals to his name, and even though he’s set to miss out to Lionel Messi for the Pichichi, Benzema is the 4/1 favourite to open the scoring here.

Long shot: Leganes secured a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid when the teams met at Butarque in the Copa del Rey last season. The same result in this game could save the home team from relegation, and it’s priced at 9/1 in the betting. With Guerrero getting the goal, those odds rise to 160/1
