Liverpool v Leeds Predictions and Preview

Jurgen Klopp has been quiet in the transfer market but there could be movement between now and October. New Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman wants Georginio Wijnaldum at Camp Nou and there is a belief the deal will get done. The Dutchman is likely to be replaced by Thiago and the signing of the Bayern Munich conductor would be a real coup for Liverpool.

Big things are expected of Naby Keita after an underwhelming two seasons in England. The Guinean has looked bright in fits and starts and is fighting for his Liverpool career. Keita is 3/1 to score anytime.

Further forward, there is talk of either Rhian Brewster or Origi leaving and another attacker coming in but the starting eleven largely picks itself. Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will take their places in attack and each player has a valuable role to play.

Firmino is the unselfish false nine who may not offer the same output as the wideman, but is one of the first names on Klopp’s teamsheet. The Brazilian is 9/2 to open proceedings and Salah is 11/4 in the same betting. The Liverpool number 11 is six away from a century of strikes for the club and has an impressive record against promoted clubs. Mane is 15/4 to break the deadlock and the Reds are 1/4 to clinch victory.

Marcelo Bielsa’s troops also tasted league silverware last term and are targeting a top-half finish. New acquisitions Rodrigo and Robin Koch will go straight in to the side and bring pedigree and experience.

Rodrigo leads the line at national level for Spain and his £30m transfer demonstrates Leeds’ intent. The former Valencia ace is 7/2 to bag anytime on his debut and the travelling Whites are 9/1 to pull off a shock win. The draw is 5/1.

One to watch for Liverpool: Trent Alexander-Arnold played a part in 17 goals in 2019-20, from right-back. The local lad is not only an assist machine, but a set-piece specialist, and is 18/1 to register first.

One to watch for Leeds: Pablo Hernandez is adored by the natives and Bielsa has earmarked a role for the Spaniard. The ex-Swansea City midfielder will be utilised from the bench and is 18/1 to get the final effort of the contest.

Long shot: Despite running away with the title, Liverpool are not favourites to retain the trophy, but the lack of backing will not phase Klopp. Historically, the Merseysiders tend to dispatch newly promoted outfits with relative ease and a repeat of the 4-1 result against Norwich in August 2019 is 20/1.
