Champions League semi-finalists Lyon are straight back into the start of their new domestic campaign, as Les Gones welcome Dijon to the Groupama Stadium on Friday night. A good start to the new season is always crucial, and Lyon must ensure there’s no European hangover in the early weeks of the Ligue 1 campaign.
Where and when: Groupama Stadium – 28 August, kick-off 20:00

Last time: Neither side could make the breakthrough as the teams shared a goalless draw at the Groupama Stadium last October.
Lyon v Dijon Predictions and Preview
Lyon have enjoyed a strong record against Dijon in recent years, winning five of the last nine Ligue 1 meetings between the clubs. Dijon did win 3-1 at the Groupama Stadium the season before last though, and are looking to get their first points of the season on the board this weekend.
The same goes for Lyon, of course, with this their first match of the season. Rudi Garcia’s side were hugely impressive on the global stage in reaching the Champions League semi-finals, beating Manchester City in the quarters before eventual champions Bayern Munich ended their fairytale run in the last four.
There won’t be any European football for Lyon this season though, after they were one of the biggest losers resulting from the curtailment of Ligue 1 back in March. Les Gones were in good form and looking likely to move up the table, but were controversially consigned to seventh place despite only being a point behind fifth with eight games remaining.

Dijon to win 3-1
Lyon to win by 2 goals
Dijon, meanwhile, were guaranteed their place in the French top flight through a 16th-placed finish, with Stephane Jobard’s side seven points clear of the bottom two when the season was cancelled. Les Hiboux lost 1-0 at home to Angers in their season opener on Saturday, and this is a tough game for them to follow that up with.
That said, Dijon will hope their hosts aren’t quite at the races following the highs and lows of their European adventure. The Cote-d’Or outfit have taken four points from their last two games against Lyon, with both of those matches at the Groupama Stadium.
The away team are still the clear underdogs in the latest Lyon v Dijon predictions for this game though. They are priced at 17/2, while you can back Lyon to make a positive start to the new season with a win at 2/5. If you think this fixture will end all square for the second time in a row, the draw’s available at 9/2.
One to watch for Lyon: Moussa Dembele was unable to repeat the magic he produced in netting a brace off the bench against City in the Champions League semi-finals against Munich. He netted 24 goals in 43 games across all competitions last season though, and is one of the favourites to open the scoring on Saturday.
One to watch for Dijon: Captain and centre-forward Julio Tavares is expected to be fit for this game after missing Dijon’s season opener with a groin strain. He made a great start to last season, scoring each of his team’s first three goals of the campaign, and he’s worth a look in the anytime scorer market here.
Long shot: Dijon have avoided defeat at this ground on each of their last two visits, winning 3-1 here in April of last year. The visitors are available at 90/1 to repeat that scoreline this weekend, giving you a massive payout should the bet come in. Lyon are 21/2 to win by the same score, which is perhaps a likelier outcome.
