Metz get their Ligue 1 campaign underway against Monaco at the Stade Saint-Symphorien this weekend. Sunday’s fixture will be the away team’s second game of the season though, so will that have any bearing on the outcome?
Where and when: Stade Saint-Symphorien – 30 August, kick-off 14:00
Where you can see Metz vs. Monaco: BT Sport
Last time: Metz cruised to a 3-0 victory over Monaco when the teams met at the same ground in August of last year, with Habibou Diallo netting the first two goals before Renaud Cohade added the third.
Metz v Monaco Predictions and Preview
Monaco didn’t get the chance to avenge their 3-0 defeat to Metz at this ground last season, with the return fixture cancelled when Ligue 1 was curtailed back in March. The principality club were frozen in time in ninth place by the coronavirus pandemic, and one of the major losers with only a single point between them and fifth-placed Nice with eight games remaining.
Monaco face another season without European football as a result, and began their campaign with a decent enough 2-2 draw against Reims last weekend. Metz, meanwhile, haven’t played since a friendly victory over Strasbourg two weeks ago.
Les Grenats were awarded 15th place last term after accumulating 34 points from 28 games, so they were at least worthy of staying in the top flight thanks to their 11-point gap to the bottom two. Vincent Hognon’s side are looking for their third straight victory over Monaco here in all competitions, having scored six in their previous two against Les Monegasques.

Over 2.5 goals
Monaco to win 3-0
Monaco to win to nil
Monaco did beat Metz seven times in a row before that though, including a couple of big 5-0 and 7-0 victories. The 2017 Ligue 1 champions scored a total of 21 goals in those seven games, keeping six clean sheets in the process. They are the 13/12 favourites to get back to winning ways against Metz this weekend, with another win to nil for Monaco in this fixture priced at 12/5.
The home team, meanwhile, are priced at 11/4 in your latest Metz v Monaco predictions, with the draw available at 5/2. There hasn’t been a stalemate between these sides in the last 14 meetings between the clubs though, going back to 2005.
On the team news front, Metz are expected to be without Boubacar Traore due to a knee injury, although he should be available in the coming games. Kevin N’Doram is a long-term absentee with an Achilles problem, while Monaco are only likely to be without Pele for this weekend’s encounter.
One to watch for Metz: Habibou Diallo is worth a look in the first goalscorer market for this game, after the Metz forward netted a brace against Monaco the last time the teams locked horns.
One to watch for Monaco: Wissam Ben Yedder didn’t get either of Monaco’s two goals last weekend, but the Frenchman is always interesting for the first goal after netting 18 times in 26 Ligue 1 appearances last season in his debut campaign for Les Monegasques.
Long shot: The winning team has scored exactly three goals in each of the last three meetings between these clubs. Three was also the magic number during Monaco’s seven-match winning run against Metz, with Les Monegasques averaging exactly three goals per game over the course of that sequence. We’re backing Monaco to win to nil this weekend at 12/5, with a 3-0 away win priced at 19/1.
