Milan host Atalanta at the San Siro on Sunday, as the Rossoneri look for their second win of the new season. Gennaro Gattuso’s side have played a game less than everyone in Serie A except for Genoa, but they start this weekend in a lowly 13th position at this early stage of the campaign.

Last time: Franck Yannick Kessie gave Milan the lead when the teams met at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in May, but Andrea Masiello scored an injury-time leveller for the hosts.

Milan v Atalanta Predictions and Preview

As well as struggling for wins this season, Milan have also struggled against Atalanta over recent years. The Rossoneri haven’t beaten the Nerazzurri in their last six attempts, with Atalanta winning two of those most recent meetings.

Milan are still the 11/10 favourites for the win on Sunday though, despite their poor record against Atalanta and their midweek Europa League trip to Luxembourg to face F91 Dudelange. Gattuso’s side kicked off their Serie A campaign with an entertaining 3-2 defeat at Napoli, but bounced back to beat Roma 2-1 in their first home game of the season.

Any momentum that could’ve started rolling was quickly extinguished with a draw at Cagliari last weekend, and another draw in this game is available at 28/11. Considering four of the last six games between these two sides have ended all square, the stalemate is certainly worth a look at that price.

Atalanta are 29/10 to beat Milan on their own turf for the second season in a row. La Dea were 2-0 winners at the San Siro last term, and they’re unbeaten in their last four visits to this famous old stadium. The Nerazzurri haven’t exactly started this season in good form though, winning just once in their opening four games, which came at home to Frosinone in their first fixture of the campaign.

The visitors will have to do without Marco Varnier and Alejandro Daro Gomez as they look for their second victory of the season, while Patrick Cutrone, Andrea Conti and Ivan Strinic are all expected to miss out for the hosts.

This could be a closely fought contest, with little to separate the two sides. A low-scoring draw could be on the cards, and after two 1-1 draws in the last three meetings between the sides, another one of those is priced at 6/1.

One to watch for Milan: Gonzalo Higuain is starting to hit his stride in Milan. The Argentine has scored in each of his last two games, and is the 4/1 favourite to open the scoring here.

One to watch for Atalanta: Emiliano Rigoni scored twice against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico a few weeks ago, and he could be a decent outside bet at 12/1 for the first goal on Sunday.

Long shot: Milan’s last victory over Atalanta at the San Siro came courtesy of a 3-0 scoreline in January 2014. The Rossoneri are 21/1 to win by the same margin on Sunday.
