This is another huge game for Newcastle United, as the Magpies welcome Crystal Palace to St James’ Park on Tuesday night. Now that Frank Lampard has lost his job, speculation will intensify around Steve Bruce with the Toon manager desperate for a win.

Last time: Callum Wilson and Joelinton both scored in the dying stages to hand Newcastle a dramatic 2-0 victory when these teams met at Selhurst Park in late November.

Newcastle v Crystal Palace Predictions and Preview

Newcastle United followed up their late show against Crystal Palace two months ago with a 2-1 victory over struggling West Bromwich Albion. Should the Magpies fail to beat Everton on Saturday, that will take them to 12 matches without a win in all competitions, since that win at home to the Baggies.

Newcastle will be on home soil for this game, after taking a five-match losing run into their trip to Goodison Park. Just two points from a possible 27 prior to that match isn’t good enough. Quite simply, it’s relegation form, and Mike Ashley won’t hesitate in pulling the trigger on Bruce if it looks like his team are going to drop out of the Premier League.

There have been mitigating factors in Newcastle’s alarming slump, which has seen them drop right back towards the bottom three following an excellent start to the campaign. The absence of star man Allan Saint-Maximin has been keenly felt, but the exciting winger has returned to the fold in recent games following a long battle with Covid-19.

There’s a lot of pressure on his shoulders to inspire a revival in Newcastle’s fortunes, and if Bruce can name a team with him, Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser all fit and firing, they should have all the quality they need to climb back up the Premier League table. Especially with the likes of Miguel Almiron, Andy Carroll and Joelinton all pushing for a place in the starting XI.

Despite that, the home team are the 19/10 underdogs coming into this Newcastle v Crystal Palace preview. The visiting Eagles are the slight favourites at 17/10, with the draw priced at 9/4 with William Hill

Palace are hardly in top form at the moment either though, winning only one of their nine Premier League fixtures prior to Saturday’s home game against Wolves. Even that was against bottom club Sheffield United, prior to the Blades turning the form book on its head by beating high-flying Manchester United.

Roy Hodgson’s side need to improve at the back if they’re going to turn their sticky patch around. The Eagles have the second-worst defensive record in the league after conceding 36 goals through their first 20 matches, keeping only two clean sheets since the opening day of the season. With that in mind, both teams to score in this game looks good at 19/20

One to watch for Newcastle: Allan Saint-Maximin is only 23, but his performances in the early part of this season carried Newcastle to their great start. How he plays on Tuesday is likely to be key to the outcome of any of our Newcastle v Crystal Palace predictions.

One to watch for Crystal Palace: Like Saint-Maximin, Wilfred Zaha provides the X factor for his team. The Ivory Coast international opened the scoring against West Ham last midweek inside the first few minutes of the game and is always a threat.

Long shot: Meetings between these two teams don’t usually produce a lot of goals. However, this one could be different. An over 4.5 goals bet is priced at 17/2, with Newcastle available at 47/1 to inflict a second 3-2 defeat inside a week on Palace.
