Germany are seeking revenge for one of the most humiliating results in their history when they visit Macedonia in World Cup qualification. Die Mannschaft lost on home soil to the country currently ranked 74th in the world earlier in this section, but it’s been all change for the European heavyweight since then.

Last time: North Macedonia shocked the world when they beat Germany 2-1 at Duisburg’s Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena back in March. Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty cancelled out an opener from Goran Pandev, but Eljif Elmas struck for the visitors five minutes from time to secure one of the most remarkable international results in recent memory.
North Macedonia v Germany Predictions and Preview
It’s fair to say Germany have responded well to their embarrassing defeat to North Macedonia by winning their three following World Cup qualifiers. Of course, Hansi Flick has now replaced long-serving manager Joachim Low in the German dugout, with the new coach’s influence clear to see so far.
After going out to England in the last 16 of Euro 2020, Germany bounced back with three wins to nil in the last international window, and their first with Flick at the helm. Die Mannschaft rarely looked threatened in keeping three clean sheets and scoring 12 goals in victories over Liechtenstein, Armenia and Iceland.
This is no gimme though, considering what happened the last time these teams met, and the fact that the Lions are back on home soil in this North Macedonia v Germany preview. Even so, Die Mannschaft are huge favourites to pick up the three points and continue their march towards a top-spot finish in Group J.
The North Macedonians may have entered the current window fourth in this section, but they are far from finished when it comes to qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. Blagoja Milevski’s side headed into Friday’s away game against Liechtenstein just two points behind second-placed Armenia, with a spot in the play-offs very much up for grabs.
Even so, it would constitute another monumental shock if North Macedonia were to complete the double over the Germans. Flick has named the likes of Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz in his squad, while the home team can no longer call on record appearance maker and goalscorer Pandev in these North Macedonia v Germany predictions, following his retirement at Euro 2020.
One to watch for North Macedonia: Aleksandar Trajkovski takes on the mantle of being North Macedonia’s main goal threat following Pandev’s retirement. He had 18 goals from his first 71 international appearances, some 20 goals behind Pandev.
One to watch for Germany: Leroy Sane has shown signs of getting back to his best form for Bayern Munich this season. The talented winger should be realising his potential at 25, but had only scored nine goals in his first 37 appearances for Die Mannschaft.
Long shot: Any form of result for the hosts should be considered a long shot in these North Macedonia v Germany tips. It would be some story if the Lions could repeat their historic 2-1 victory over the Germans the last time these countries met.
