Paris Saint-Germain begin their title defence with a home game against Nimes at the Parc des Princes on Sunday evening. The visitors may have impressed with a top-half finish last season, but it’s very tough to see anything other than a home win this weekend.

Last time: PSG comfortably dispatched Nimes 3-0 when the teams met in the French capital in February. Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring just before half-time, before Kylian Mbappe added two more after the break.

Paris Saint-Germain v Nimes Predictions and Preview

The Ligue 1 champions may have had a difficult summer to deal with, but they remain the red-hot favourites to retain their title come next May. They’re also the heavy favourites for this game, which begs the question; do Nimes have any chance of a result against Paris Saint-Germain?

In truth, probably not. PSG have won all three of the meetings between the sides, triumphing 4-2 at the Stade des Costieres last season, as the famed front three of Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani all got their names on the scoresheet.

That may not be the case this weekend though, as Neymar’s bid to leave the Parc des Princes looks set to rumble on. PSG boss Thomas Tuchel has a decision on whether to include the Brazilian in his squad as the world’s most expensive player attempts to engineer a move back to Barcelona.

Whether he gets his wish before or after this match, and whether he features on Sunday or not, PSG still have the firepower to see off this Nimes side with comparative ease. Bernard Blaquart’s side did superbly well to finish ninth in their debut Ligue 1 campaign, but PSG are next level compared to any other team in the French top flight.

Consequently, there’s little value in the home win in the outright market, with Les Rouge et Bleu priced at 1/9 to open their season with three points. Nimes are all the way out at 30/1 for the win, which is an incredible price for a two-horse race.

There is of course a third outcome in a draw, which the away team would bite your hand off prior to kick-off. That’s available at 10/1, but even at that price it doesn’t look very tempting. Nimes may hope to catch their hosts cold at the dawn of a new campaign, but PSG are simply far too strong in every department.

That leaves us looking for some value on the hosts. After beating Les Crocodiles to nil in Paris last term, PSG are 3/4 to do the same again, bringing the odds much closer to evens. You can bet against both teams scoring at 4/6, while PSG are 6/1 to repeat their 3-0 victory from last season.

One to watch for PSG: Mbappe has been electric since he moved to his native Paris from Monaco, finishing as Ligue 1’s top scorer last season by an 11-goal margin with 33 strikes to his name. He’s 15/8 to pick up where he left off by opening the scoring on Sunday evening.

One to watch for Nimes: Les Crocodiles have hardly splashed the cash this summer, with their transfer outlay totalling only a few million euros so far. A couple of those went on midfielder Sidy Sarr, who despite being defensively-minded, is 66/1 to break the deadlock this weekend.

Long shot: He scored one against Nimes the first time he played them, then two the second time. Mbappe is a phenomenal talent and he’s available at 14/1 to continue his sequence against Nimes by bagging a hat-trick in this game.
