Porto v Milan Predictions and Preview

This will be the first Champions League meeting between these two clubs since the 1996-97 season, when Porto followed up a 3-2 victory at San Siro with a 1-1 draw back on home soil. Those were the only two points the Portuguese outfit dropping on their way to topping that group, but the Dragons find themselves in a very different situation heading into this match.

Porto manager Sergio Conceicao is looking for a significant reaction here, after his team went down 5-1 at home to Premier League side Liverpool on their last European outing. The Blue and Whites do at least have a point to their name though, following their goalless draw away to Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in their opening fixture.

That’s more than can be said for Milan, who may have been extremely unfortunate to lose 2-1 at the death to Atletico last time out following a 3-2 defeat at Liverpool, but they remain pointless nonetheless. The Rossoneri have made a strong start to their Serie A campaign though, and we can expect them to be very much in this contest.

Stefano Pioli will hope to have strike duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Giroud available for this game following injury and illness. He will also hope his defence and back-up goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu can stand tall in the absence of No 1 Mike Maignan, who’s made a superb start to life at San Siro as Gigio Donnarumma’s replacement.

The visitors start this game as the 33/20 favourites in the betting, while you can back the home team at 7/4 in this Porto v Milan preview. The draw at 11/4 wouldn’t do either side too many favours with Liverpool and Atletico taking points off each other at the same time as this game, with a victory potentially doing wonders for either side here.

One to watch for Porto: Luis Diaz has made a fast start to the season with six goals in his first eight league matches. He’s yet to register in the Champions League, but will be looking to put that right in these Porto v Milan predictions.

One to watch for Milan: Rafael Leao has had to shoulder plenty of expectation in the absence of his more experienced strike partners. The exciting Portuguese forward has made an encouraging start to the campaign though and is worth a look for the opening goal here.

Long shot: On balance, Milan have the tools to just about edge this game. Il Diavolo are 7/2 to win by one goal in these Porto v Milan tips, while you can back the visitors at 9/1 for a 1-0 victory to mirror their UEFA Super Cup triumph of 18 years ago.
