It seems incredible that Cristiano Ronaldo may miss out on potentially a last chance to win a World Cup with Portugal. But, thanks to a terrible qualification run-in, Portugal now have to beat Turkey for a chance to play Italy or North Macedonia for a place in Qatar.

Last time: These two last met over 10 years ago in a Euro 2012 warm-up match. Turkey ran out 3-1 winners in Lisbon on that day.

Portugal vs. Turkey Predictions and Preview

Portugal headed into the final two games of World Cup qualifying with their future in their own hands. They were one point behind Serbia, with two games to play – including a final dramatic shoot-out against the Balkan side on the final match day. A goalless draw in Ireland set the alarm bells ringing and every Portuguese fan’s worst nightmare was confirmed with a 90th minute winner from Serbia at the Estádio da Luz.

Turkey had started their qualification campaign impressively. But it was bisected by a woeful Euro 2020 (delayed until 2021) and the team just hasn’t looked the same since. Just progressing to this stage from a tricky group should probably be seen as an achievement, but Stefan Kuntz’s men now need to beat Portugal and probably Italy to reach their first World Cup finals in 20 years.

Anything can happen with this winner takes all format. But Portugal must be considered favourite to win here.

Portugal vs. Turkey full time result odds

It seems as though Stefan Kuntz has brought back a winning attitude for the Turkish national team. There is still a reliance of the veteran Burak Yilmaz to score goals, although there are a few younger players like Kerem Aktürkoglu, coming through now.

Portugal should be stronger but will have João Cancelo, Renato Sanches, Rúben Dias and Nélson Samedo all out for this one. It will still be a shock if Portugal don’t progress though. The home win is priced at 1/3.

Portugal vs. Turkey both teams to score odds

Since the debacle of Euro 2020, Turkey have actually scored in every game – even in the 6-1 mauling at the hands of the Netherlands. But we are likely to see a more defensive side in Porto, looking to soak up the host’s pressure and hitting on the counter. Portugal have an array of stars able to provide the goals needed to progress to the playoff final but could be frustrated. A bet against both teams to score at 7/10 seems the way to go here.

Portugal vs. Turkey correct score odds

For all their attacking talent, Portugal were unable to find the net against Ireland and could only manage one in that defeat to Serbia. There will be some that see Turkey as an easy touch here but the visitors will be determined to prove the doubters wrong and will surely set up ultra defensively. That could make for a tough game for Portugal and a 1-0 home win can be found at 5/1.

Portugal vs. Turkey first goalscorer odds

It is difficult to look past Cristiano Ronaldo for first goalscorer on Thursday. His record is just incredible and he could be the beneficiary of a penalty if Turkey do end up playing defensively in Porto. Ronaldo can be found at around 2/1 but Bernardo Silva or Diogo Jota might be considered for a bet with longer odds.
