PSG v Marseille Predictions and Preview

Thomas Tuchel’s preparations for the new campaign have taken a hit. The German was without seven first-teamers for the clash with Lens, including regular front line Mbappe, Neymar and Di Maria, while striking deputy Icardi would have featured but was also in quarantine after contracting coronavirus.

Keylor Navas, Marquinhos and Leandro Paredes endured the same fate leaving Tuchel to put together a side already short of options. For all their wealth, PSG have a modest pool of players and require reinforcements in a number of areas with former skipper Thiago Silva leaving a glaring hole in the backline.

In more positive news for the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss, Marco Verratti is now fully fit. The Pescara native makes the Parisians tick and there will be increased importance on the PSG number 6 to lead the hosts to victory.

Julian Draxler will start as a makeshift striker. The winger by trade is wanted by new Premier League outfit Leeds and could yet move before October for regular game time. The World Cup winner is 15/2 to open proceedings and PSG are 4/9 to earn the win on the night.

Marseille welcome back Payet to the line-up. The maverick is the star performer in Andre Villas-Boas’ ranks and is 11/2 to break the deadlock. Meanwhile, compatriot Florian Thauvin is available at 7/2 in the same market and Villas-Boas will hope he can keep hold of the winger. Thauvin is on the radar of Bayer Leverkusen and the Olympians are likely to have their resolve tested in the coming weeks.

With Kostas Mitroglu on his way out of the club, Darío Benedetto is the only recognised forward in the camp. The Argentine hit double figures in his maiden season and is 6/5 to open his account in the new term. Marseille are 9/2 to be victorious and the draw is 4/1.

One to watch for PSG: Ander Herrera shot to fame as a box-to-box midfielder for Athletic Bilbao and will have licence to get forward with Idrissa Gueye sitting in front of the defence. The Spaniard is 25/1 to score last.

One to watch for Marseille: Duje Ćaleta-Car was the unlikely hero against Brest and the giant stopper is 14/1 to register anytime.

Long shot: Marseille will not get another opportunity in the foreseeable future to beat their bitter enemies. PSG are a completely different proposition without their three world class attackers and Tuchel will largely be relying on youngsters and out of favour squad members. A 2-0 success in favour of the Olympians is 35/1.
