Real Madrid v Atalanta Predictions and Preview

Karim Benzema, Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Eden Hazard, Eder Militao, Federico Valverde and Marcelo were all absent in Italy but Zidane will be boosted by the return of his star striker. Vice-captain Benzema salvaged a draw for his team-mates in the Madrid derby last weekend and is still one of the best in his position on the continent.

The Frenchman has carried the goalscoring burden on his shoulders since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and has 17 efforts and a further five assists from 27 appearances this term. Benzema is 3/1 to open proceedings and only Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and fellow Real legend Raul have netted more in the competition’s history.

Casemiro will serve a one-game suspension and is a huge loss for Zidane. The South American is the only holding midfielder in the squad but has also chipped in with some big goals and has enjoyed immense success alongside Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. The World Cup winner is 17/2 to bag anytime and his partner in the middle of the park can be found at 9/1. Los Blancos are 19/20 to get the job done in normal time and 1/4 outright.

Travelling party Atalanta are still in contention. La Dea did not trouble Real on home soil but Gian Piero Gasperini’s troops will be spurred on by some questionable refereeing calls. Remo Freuler was dismissed and performs a similar role to Casemiro in allowing the likes of Duvan Zapata, Josip Ilicic, Luis Muriel, Aleksei Miranchuk and Ruslan Malinovskiy to fly forward while the tireless Swiss protects the backline.

Zapata is 15/4 to break the deadlock and Ilicic is available at 9/2. When on song, the ex-Fiorentina ace is unplayable and he has fond memories of playing in Spain after hitting Valencia for four in 2019-20. Atalanta are 5/2 to win in 90 minutes and 11/4 to qualify.

One to watch for Atalanta: Gasperini largely prefers to use Muriel as a super sub and the hitman has perfected the role. The speedster is 12/5 to notch last.

One to watch for Real Madrid: Zidane has been patient with Hazard but the record buy needs to deliver between now and May or risk being moved on. The winger is 8/1 in the same market.

Long shot: Atalanta are no longer a surprise package and merit their standing as one of the best outfits in Italy. La Dea may not have the experience of Real on the continent but have the firepower to quickly change the complexion of the tie and a 2-0 outcome is 22/1.
