Real Madrid v Athletic Bilbao Predictions and Preview
Karim Benzema could receive a well-earned rest with Mariano deputising for the Madrid vice-captain. The Frenchman has contributed 12 goals and five assists from 21 appearances and a long-term successor is high on Florentino Perez’ agenda this summer.
The 33-year-old is only likely to feature if his services are required and is 11/4 to net last. Record buy Eden Hazard needs the minutes and will definitely start. After multiple spells out on the treatment table, the winger’s game time is being carefully managed by Zidane but patience is wearing thin with the natives who are desperate to see the player reach the level that made him a Chelsea idol. Hazard is 11/2 to break the deadlock.

Forgotten man Isco could come in. The Andalusian is in his eighth season at the club and a new challenge could be on the horizon. The Spain international is admired by a host of Premier League sides and Carlo Ancelotti is keen on a reunion with the right footer. Isco is 13/8 to open proceedings and team-mate Vinicius is available at 11/5 in the anytime market. Real are 4/6 to claim victory in normal time and 2/7 to qualify on the night.
Elsewhere, Athletic will go with a front three of Inaki Williams, Iker Muniain and former Diego Simeone disciple Raul Garcia. The veteran struck on 15 occasions last term, largely from midfield, but will tussle with Sergio Ramos in a more advanced role.
Los Leones number 22 is 10/1 to open proceedings and will be keen to make amends for his dismissal last month. One-time Manchester City target Williams is 7/2 to register anytime and compatriot Muniain can be found at 10/3. Bilbao are 15/4 to spring a shock in 90 minutes and 23/10 to advance outright. A draw is 14/5.
One to watch for Real Madrid: Martin Ødegaard shone on loan at the Anoeta and is well thought of by Zidane. The playmaker is set for a bigger role once Luka Modric and Toni Kroos depart or retire and is 12/5 to notch anytime.
One to watch for Athletic Bilbao: Alex Berenguer can operate anywhere across the forward line and is 9/2 to bag anytime. Only Muniain and Williams have scored more for Los Leones this term.
Long shot: Bilbao have not been at their best this year but have showed signs of improvement this winter. The Basque club drew with Villarreal and were desperately unlucky against Barcelona in the last round of league action and can take inspiration from Osasuna and Elche who recently frustrated Los Blancos. A 2-0 success in favour of Los Leones is 33/1.
