Real Madrid are looking to get their title challenge right back on track as they return to action with a home game against Eibar. The visitors are struggling down at the bottom of the La Liga table, although they’ll hope to catch their hosts napping here.

Real Madrid v Eibar Predictions and Preview

Real Madrid have an excellent record against Eibar, and their supremacy over the Basque club is borne out by the two teams’ respective positions in the La Liga table. While Real are only two points behind league leaders Barcelona and battling for their first title in three years, Eibar are fighting for their top-flight status and only two points clear of the bottom three.

These teams have met 11 times in La Liga since Eibar were promoted to the top tier in 2014, with Madrid picking up the win on nine occasions. They’ve kept a clean sheet in seven of those wins, including their convincing victory earlier this term.

Zinedine Zidane’s side were on a poor run of form just before the coronavirus pandemic struck, failing to win four of their five games before football was halted. That included three defeats, to Real Betis and Levante in La Liga, and to Manchester City in the Champions League.

Eibar also only won one of their five matches before the break, losing the other four. Three of those were narrow 2-1 losses, but the other was a 5-0 hiding away to Barcelona. Los Armeros are really up against it here, but could they take some heart from Germany’s Bundesliga?

The German top flight has seen more away wins than home ones since restarting last month, showing that a lack of home support has really affected teams. However, Madrid didn’t need any home fans to see off Eibar with ease earlier in the season, and we don’t expect them to struggle here either.

Eden Hazard appears to be fully fit again after an injury-ravaged season, although there are doubts over Gareth Bale’s match fitness. Luka Jovic and Nacho Fernandez are both out for the hosts, while visiting boss Jose Luis Mendilibar will be without the injured Ivan Ramis and the suspended Gonzalo Escalante.

Even with all his players available, this would be a daunting task for Mendilibar. The away team are the 12/1 underdogs to take all three points back to the Basque Country this weekend. Real are the heavy favourites at 2/9, while the draw’s priced at 11/2

One to watch for Real Madrid: Eden Hazard has struggled in his first season in Spain, but reports have suggested the Belgian is looking sharp in training. He is 21/4 to open the scoring on Sunday.

One to watch for Eibar: Fabian Orellana is Eibar’s top scorer with seven goals to his name in La Liga so far this season. He is out at 18/1 to break the deadlock here.

Long shot: Madrid eased to a 4-0 victory over Eibar earlier this season, while Mendilibar’s side were thumped 5-0 at Barcelona just before the football season came to a halt. Los Blancos are 11/1 to win this game 4-0, rising to 39/1 with Karim Benzema scoring first.
