Last time: Barcelona beat Real Sociedad in a penalty shootout when the teams met in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de Espana in January.
Real Sociedad v Barcelona Predictions and Preview
Barcelona head into this weekend’s La Liga fixtures just four points behind Atletico Madrid at the top of the table. With Atletico and Real Madrid both in action before this game against Real Sociedad kicks off, Ronald Koeman and his players will know exactly what a victory on Sunday night will mean for their title chances.
Barca’s Spanish Super Cup victory a couple of months ago took the Catalan giants to 12 games unbeaten against Sociedad in all competitions. Including that spot kick success, the Blaugrana have won 10 of those matches, scoring 22 goals and conceding 10 in the process.
With that aggregate score in mind, a 2-1 win for the away team this weekend could be worth a look at 8/1 in these Real Sociedad v Barcelona predictions. Particularly as Barca will be missing key defender Gerard Pique, making them a little more vulnerable at the back.
The visitors will also be without Ansu Fati, Philippe Coutinho and Sergi Roberto through injury, while the hosts could be missing as many as six players. That includes Aritz Elustondo, Joseba Zaldua, Miguel Angel Moya and Jon Pacheco, as well as Alex Sola and Luca Sangalli.

Barcelona to win 2-1
Messi to score first
If you’re looking for the outright odds for this game, you’ll find Barcelona are the 13/12 favourites. Koeman’s side may have crashed out of the Champions League following a last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, but they are on a 17-match unbeaten run in La Liga. Barca have won 14 of those games, including each of the last four.
Sociedad, meanwhile, are 27/10 for the victory with William Hill. Los Txuri-Urdin have also exited European competition in recent weeks, following their Europa League defeat to Manchester United. Imanol Alguacil’s side lost their first La Liga game in eight last weekend, going down 1-0 away to Granada, leaving them six points behind fourth-placed Sevilla having played a game more.
Sociedad have drawn four of their last 10 league games, with another stalemate this weekend priced at 56/19 in the latest odds for this weekend’s encounter. Considering Barcelona’s form though, and the fact that the visitors could have the chance to further reduce the deficit at the top of the table, the away win appears the way to go.
One to watch for Real Sociedad: Alexander Isak is without a goal in his last four appearances, and has been subbed off in each of those games. The Swedish striker is due a goal though after netting nine goals in six La Liga fixtures prior to that run, and 6/1 to break the deadlock on Sunday.
One to watch for Barcelona: Lionel Messi is the 18/5 favourite to open the scoring in this game, after bagging a brace in Monday’s 4-1 victory over Huesca. The Argentine now has 21 league goals this season, three more than former team mate Luis Suarez at the top of the scoring charts.
Long shot: We’ve picked out a 2-1 away win as a result to look out for at 8/1, as part of our Real Sociedad v Barcelona tips. Adding Messi to that bet as the first goalscorer boosts those odds to 41/1, which is another solid bet worth considering at that price.
