Real Sociedad v Real Madrid Predictions and Preview
Third-placed Real Sociedad welcome leaders Real Madrid to the Reale Arena in a crucial fixture at the top of La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have 33 points and hold a four-point advantage over the Basques, while Los Blancos also have a game in hand.
Real Madrid are on a four-game winning streak and have won six of their away La Liga fixtures this term. The capital outfit were held to a 3-3 draw away to Levante, while their only loss so far was a 2-1 defeat away to Espanyol.
However, Los Blancos only managed two draws against Manuel Pellegrini’s side last season and even failed to score at the Anoeta, as the game ended in a goalless draw. Vinicius Junior saved the day in the reverse fixture, as his late equaliser earned his side a 1-1 draw.
Real Madrid have won only one of their last three visits to Real Sociedad, but Ancelotti will like his team’s chances now, as he has almost a full squad at his disposal. Gareth Bale and Dani Ceballos are the only absentees, but both of them wouldn’t start anyway, while the declining form of the hosts is another boost for Los Blancos.
Real Sociedad were beaten 1-0 away to Espanyol last week, while they’ve also failed to win three of their last five games at home. Despite this, the White and Blues are still unbeaten in their own backyard. Manuel Pellegrini’s men have four victories and three draws at the Reale Arena, while their last win against Real Madrid at home was in 2019.
Challenging for the title might be out of Real Sociedad’s reach, but a top-four finish might be a more realistic target. However, the competition will be fierce, so the Basques must return to their levels from the start of the season.
Injuries have creeped into Pellegrini’s squad, as the Argentinian tactician will have to do without key figures like David Silva, Nacho Monreal and Asier Illararmendi, while Carlos Fernandez, Mikel Merino and Jon Guridi are also out.
A victory for the hosts can be backed at 11/5 and while Real Sociedad remain a quality side, both current form and injuries suggest that such an outcome remains unlikely. The draw is available at 12/5, while a victory for Real Madrid is rated at 5/4.
One to watch for Real Sociedad: Mikel Oyarzabal’s six goals make him Real Sociedad’s current top scorer. The 24-year-old hasn’t scored in La Liga for two months and will be eager to change that against Real Madrid, so at 6/1 watch out for him to break the deadlock on Saturday.
One to watch for Real Madrid: Karim Benzema has six goals in his last five games for Real Madrid in all competitions. Considering his fantastic form, it’s no surprise that at 7/2 the Frenchman is the main favourite to score the opener against Sociedad.
Long shot: Real Madrid have won three of their last five away games in La Liga 2-1. A repeat of that score against Real Sociedad is available at 17/2, while the odds rise to 274/1 if you also bet on Real Sociedad/Real Madrid in the half time/full time market, with Los Blancos winning from behind.
