Two teams who both enjoyed the sweet taste of an opening day victory face each other this weekend, as Rennes host Paris Saint-Germain at Roazhon Park on Sunday evening. PSG put the Neymar controversy behind them to cruise to a 3-0 win against Nimes, while Rennes secured an impressive 1-0 victory at Montpellier.
Where and when: Roazhon Park – 18 August, kick-off 20:00
Where you can see Rennes vs. Paris Saint-Germain: BT Sport, William Hill live streaming
Last time: The teams met in the Trophee des Champions curtain-raiser a couple of weeks back, with PSG coming from behind to win 2-1 courtesy of goals from Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria.
Rennes v Paris Saint-Germain Predictions and Preview
Mbappe and Di Maria were also on target last weekend, along with Edinson Cavani, showing that PSG won’t be short of goals should Neymar secure the move back to Spain he is so desperate for. The champions are almost always the heavy favourites in all their Ligue 1 fixtures, but Rennes will fancy their chances of an upset on home soil.
Les Rouge et Noir certainly managed to upset the odds in last season’s Coupe de France final, as they came back from 2-0 down to beat PSG on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra-time. Rennes also won 2-0 at the Parc des Princes in May of last year, so they clearly have a big performance in them.
However, PSG have won all 12 of the other 14 most recent meetings between the clubs, scoring four or more goals on six occasions. The Parisians ended up a massive 39 points clear of Rennes last term, despite Julien Stephan’s side claiming a top-half finish.

There’s a vast gulf in quality between these sides, and even without the wantaway Neymar – who’s been told in no uncertain terms by the club’s Ultras that he’s no longer welcome in the French capital – PSG have all the tools to make it two wins out of two at the start of the new campaign.
They may be the away team this weekend, but Thomas Tuchel’s side are the overwhelming 3/8 favourites to claim the three points. Rennes meanwhile are out at 8/1, with the draw priced at 9/2. With PSG not offering particularly good value in the outright market, we’re going to have to hunt out some better odds.
Rennes have scored in their last eight matches against PSG, so we’re backing both teams to score in this game at 7/10. That price rises to 13/8 with the visitors as the winners, giving you much better value when compared to the outright odds.
One to watch for Rennes: Veteran defender Jeremy Morel never scored a Ligue 1 goal for Lyon during his four years at the club, only managing a single goal in the French top flight in the past six campaigns. He duly scored on his Ligue 1 debut for Rennes last weekend, and the Frenchman is out at 50/1 to break the deadlock once again here.
One to watch for PSG: Kylian Mbappe didn’t get to take a penalty in last season’s Coupe de France shootout after being sent off in the last couple of minutes of extra-time. French football’s golden boy struck 33 goals in the league last season though, and is 11/4 to net first this weekend, after getting his name on the scoresheet against Rennes in the Trophee des Champions.
Long shot: PSG have scored exactly four goals in four of their last 12 matches against Rennes. As we’re backing the hosts to hit the back of the net this weekend, a 4-1 win for PSG could be worth a punt at 17/1. With Mbappe as the first scorer, those odds rise to 45/1.
