Roma v Cagliari Predictions and Preview
Fifth place Roma only beat Lecce 1-0 in the previous gameweek but it was the manner of the performance that would have impressed Paulo Fonseca.
The Portuguese’s Roman Revolution is now gathering pace and after chopping and changing his side, particularly the defence, the Lupi now appear ready to challenge for a European berth.
Such is the strength of champions Juventus, Inter and Napoli, there is likely to be only one more Champions League place up for grabs and the competition is fierce with Roma, Atalanta, Lazio and a resurgent Fiorentina climbing the standings.
Despite this, Fonseca will be confident, with Edin Dzeko fit and firing. The Bosnian was the subject of strong interest from Antonio Conte’s Nerazzurri in the summer but chose to remain with the capital club, much to the delight of his manager.
Dzeko is 3/1 to open proceedings and add to his five goals this term. Meanwhile, Henrikh Mkhitaryan will feature from the left flank and is 15/8 to net anytime. The Lupi are 4/11 to chalk up another successful 90 minutes.
Visitors Cagliari aren’t expected to trouble the European places but should harbour a top-half finish. The Rossoblu have performed well, particularly in the absence of towering forward Leonardo Pavoletti, who is expected to be on the sidelines for a number of months.
2018-19 strike partner Joao Pedro has three goals to his name and is an attractive 9/1 to register first, while Giovanni Simeone is 17/2 in the same market. Cagliari are 13/2 to emerge triumphant and 4/1 to pick up a point.
One to watch for Roma: Nicolò Zaniolo was in inspired form against İstanbul Başakşehir and is capable of playing in any of the three positions behind Dzeko. The prodigious talent is 11/2 to bag last.
One to watch for Cagliari: Nahitan Nández is yet to open his account for the Sardinians since his big money move but has impressed. The South American is 9/1 to net anytime.
Long shot: Chris Smalling and Gianluca Mancini took their places at the heart of the Roma defence against Lecce and both were dominant. Manchester United owned Smalling picked up the man-of-the-match award and all areas of the pitch are now joining together nicely for Fonseca. The opposition won’t make it easy, but a 3-1 victory for the hosts is 10/1.
