Roma v Milan Predictions and Preview

Roma’s injury crisis deepened at the weekend as Nikola Kalinic and Bryan Cristante had to be substituted in the first-half against Sampdoria with groin and knee problems, respectively.

The Lupi were already without Lorenzo Pellegrini, Davide Zappacosta, Amadou Diawara and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the quartet are no closer to rejoining the first-team squad.

Paulo Fonseca reluctantly called on the services of talisman Edin Dzeko as the replacement for Kalinic, despite the Bosnian’s own problems.

Dzeko is currently recovering from a fractured cheekbone and was visibly off the pace against Claudio Ranieri’s troops and there is no guarantee the hitman will be ready to complete a full 90 minutes.

Fonseca could spring a surprise and use starlet Zaniolo as a false nine. Former Lupi manager Luciano Spalletti famously played Francesco Totti in the role and the iconic number 10 was a revelation.

In the short term, it is a position Zaniolo could feature in, such is his versatility in the midfield and forward roles, and the full international is an enticing 7/1 to strike first. Dzeko is 7/5 to net anytime. Roma are 11/10 to chalk up all three points and 5/2 to earn a draw.

Milan did not get the win they wanted against newly promoted Lecce but there were encouraging signs for Pioli. Piatek hit his first goal in three appearances and is 5/1 to open proceedings in the big clash with the Lupi. The Rossoneri are 13/5 to claim a much needed win and only their fourth from the first nine games.

One to watch for Roma: Diego Perotti returned after five months on the sidelines in the previous fixture and like Zaniolo, can play anwhere across the front line. The Argentine is 7/1 to bag the final effort.

One to watch for Milan: Rafael Leão has shared the lone striker responsibilities with Piatek but Pioli is keen to play the forwards together. The Portuguese talent is 8/1 to score last.

Long shot: Roma have only lost one tie from eight, while Milan have been beaten on four occasions from the same number of games. Pioli has a fit and healthy squad to choose from and must take advantage of his opponents’ lack of personnel. A 2-1 success for the Rossoneri is 11/1.
