Roma v Napoli Predictions and Preview

How Carlo Ancelotti would love his team to produce a performance like they did in the Italian capital last time out. Although they’re unbeaten in their last five Serie A fixtures and they’ve only lost once in their last 11 matches in all competitions, Napoli are lagging eight points behind league leaders Juventus. Roma meanwhile are a point ahead of their visitors this weekend.

The Giallorossi are up in fourth at this early stage of the season, having recorded back-to-back victories over Milan and Udinese. Paulo Fonseca’s side have only tasted defeat once in all competitions this term, a 2-0 loss at home to Atalanta.

Roma are unbeaten in their last five, winning three, although they’re set to be without Henrik Mkhitaryan, Nikola Kalinic, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Bryan Cristante and Amadou Diawara this weekend. There are also doubts over Davide Zappacosta and Devid Eugene Bouah.

Napoli meanwhile have only won one of their last four Serie A matches, a 2-0 victory over Hellas Verona a couple of weeks ago. They drew with Torino before that, and have shared the spoils with SPAL and Atalanta since.

Ancelotti’s side simply cannot afford to fall any further back from Juve. It’s curtains for their title ambitions for another season if they the gap to the champions reaches double figures, and their head coach could be left fearing for his job.

The visitors could have Elseid Hysaj back to help with this weekend’s tough task, although Kevin Malcuit remains on the sidelines and Allan is out with a knee injury. The race for the Champions League places is going to be fierce this season, making this a huge game for both sides.

That could mean proceedings go one of two ways. Either each side will set out their stall to be as tough to break down as possible in a bid to avoid defeat. Or, we could see two teams with some strong attacking talent going for each other in an effort to strike a major blow. Roma are the 8/5 favourites to do that, while Napoli are 8/5 and the draw is 13/5.

Fixtures between these two have usually been full of goals, with the last six meetings seeing 21 goals at an average of 3.5 per game. Both teams have scored in five of those, with the same outcome this weekend priced at 5/9.

One to watch for Roma: Edin Dzeko has scored five goals in 10 Serie A fixtures so far this season, and the former Manchester City striker is the 9/2 favourite to open the scoring in this game.

One to watch for Napoli: Dries Mertens isn’t far behind at 6/1 for the first goal, after finding the back of the net four times so far this term.

Long shot: It’s certainly a long shot considering Roma’s strong start to the season, but Napoli are 45/1 to make it successive 4-1 victories at the Stadio Olimpico this weekend.
