Roma vs. Sampdoria Predictions and Preview

As Milan secured another last gasp winner on Sunday night away in Udine, fellow European hopefuls Roma slipped even further down the standings in the race for a top four spot. The Giallorossi were held to a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina, which was a fair result, but were a tad fortunate in the trip to San Paolo on November 28.

Napoli equalised late on through Dries Mertens but it was the least the Azzurri deserved after comprehensively outplaying the Lupi. Roma have struggled to see out matches when in front and already find themselves playing catch up to their fellow Champions League challengers.

Central to the Giallorossi’s current plight is their struggles through on goal. The club have long been reliant on the exploits of talisman Edin Dzeko but the Bosnian has struggled domestically.

Dzeko leads the way in Europe alongside Lionel Messi with five efforts but only has two to his name in the league. Despite this, the ex-Manchester City striker is 11/4 favourite to open proceedings and is too good to let the slump in form continue. Roma are 4/9 to chalk up all three points.

Visitors Sampdoria come in to the contest after a heavy 4-1 defeat on home soil at the hands of Torino. Doria boss Marco Giampaolo could ring the changes, with Grégoire Defrel coming back in to the starting line-up. The Frenchman is the Genoa based club’s leading marksman with five strikes and will relish facing his former side. Defrel is 9/4 in the anytime market while Sampdoria are available at 6/1 for the win. The draw is 10/3.

One to watch for Roma: Cengiz Under is 5/1 to net first and will take his place on the right wing. The young Turk is reportedly in demand on the continent and is an increasingly influential performer for the Lupi.

One to watch for Sampdoria: Fabio Quagliarella may be 35-years-old but is still a prominent figure in Doria’s attacking play. The evergreen is 12/5 in the anytime betting and Daniele De Rossi must be mindful of his former international colleague who will look to drift in to a more withdrawn role.

Long shot: On paper, Roma have the edge, but Sampdoria have proven they have the ability to shock the bigger names in the division. Doria famously beat Juventus 3-2 Luigi Ferraris last campaign and the same outcome is 70/1, lifting Marco Giampaolo’s troops above Roma in the standings.
