Roma v Sassuolo Predictions and Preview

Roma were held to a 1-1 draw with Lazio in the latest instalment of the Derby della Capitale. The Lupi have shipped four goals from 180 minutes of action, and while they have taken the lead in both encounters, they have failed to make either advantage count.

Fonseca brought in Gianluca Mancini from Atalanta for a sizeable fee and Chris Smalling arrived on loan from Manchester United, and the expectation is the duo will almost certainly command the starting centre-half roles in the near future.

Pleasingly for Portuguese tactician is the international form of loanee Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian skipper netted a brace and also assisted another in his country’s 4-2 EURO 2020 qualifying win against Edin Dzeko’s Bosnia.

Mkhitaryan showed flashes of the form which secured him a move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United but this was short lived at both the Red Devils and current employers Arsenal.

Nevertheless, Fonseca will hope the change in surroundings will help to get a tune out of the 30-year-old and Mkhitaryan is 15/4 to strike anytime. Dzeko is 13/5 to open proceedings and Roma are 4/6 to claim all three points.

Visitors Sassuolo were buoyed by Domenico Berardi’s treble against Eusebio Di Francesco’s Sampdoria. Berardi is now 25, and has long been thought of as one of Italy’s best prospects but has struggled to find the consistency to go alongside his obvious ability.

With striking places up for grabs, a 15-20 goal haul could be enough to secure a place in Roberto Mancini’s final 23 for the European Championship next summer. Berardi is 4/1 to score first while the Neroverdi are 7/2 to emerge triumphant. The draw is 16/5.

One to watch for Roma: Nicolò Zaniolo was the revelation of the 2018-19 campaign and is operating in a more familiar central role just behind Dzeko. The gifted youngster is 15/4 in the anytime scorer betting.

One to watch for Sassuolo: Francesco Caputo hit 16 goals for relegated Empoli last year and could prove to be one of the shrewdest signings of the summer. The striker is 6/1 to register first.

Long shot: Sassuolo recruited well in the off-season, bringing in a nice blend of youth and experience, and a midtable finish is a fair target. In contrast, Roma are expected to finish in the European places and the pressure could soon intensify the longer the wait goes for a first victory. A 3-1 success in favour of the capital club is 11/1.
