Romania welcome Germany to the National Arena in World Cup qualifying on Sunday night, in what’s set to be a difficult night at the office for the home team. The Tricolours will be happy to avoid a pasting at the hands of the might Mannschaft, who are striving to build up some momentum with just a few months to go before the start of Euro 2020.

Last time: Romania took an early lead through Dorin Goian when these countries last met in a 2007 friendly in Cologne, but Germany roared back to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Bernd Schneider, David Odonkor and Lukas Podolski.

Romania v Germany Predictions and Preview

Romania are looking to repeat one of their most famous feats when they host Germany this weekend. The Tricolorii recorded a memorable 5-1 victory over Die Mannschaft back in 2004, just two years after the Germans had finished as runners-up at the World Cup.

This current Germany outfit is in the midst of a rebuild, with more to come following the announcement that Joachim Low’s 15-year tenure will end this summer following the Euros. Die Mannschaft suffered a humiliating 6-0 reverse against Spain in the Nations League in their last match before Thursday’s date with Iceland, and they need to establish some positivity.

Low has all the experience you could ask for on the international stage, but his reign has been stuttering for some time now. Even so, the Germans have the calibre of player within their squad to easily see off Romania this weekend.

From Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka to Ilkay Gundogan, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane, Germany also have the electric Timo Werner leading the line. There’s so much talent within Die Mannschaft’s squad, and they are the clear favourites for the win at 3/7 in these Romania v Germany predictions.

The home team are 7/1 with William Hill, as they prepare for a summer sitting on the sofa and watching the Euros in envy. Mirel Radoi’s side have enjoyed a couple of good wins on recent outings, beating Belarus 5-3 and Norway 3-0 in November, but they lost a Euro 2020 playoff 2-1 to Iceland in October and should pose little threat to their opponents here.

Even a draw at 4/1 would constitute a major shock given the dearth of quality in the Romanian squad. Former Tottenham man Vlad Chiriches captains the Tricolours, but aside from Rangers starlet and son of Romania legend Gheorghe, Ianis Hagi, there’s little to shout about through the rest of their 25-man group.

Low’s side may have suffered a dispiriting defeat just before the start of this 2022 World Cup qualification campaign, but this is exactly the kind of fixture they need to get back on track. There’s a big few months ahead, and Die Mannschaft usually start to get things right in the run-up to major tournaments.

One to watch for Romania: Ianis Hagi has made 39 appearances for newly-crowned Scottish champions Rangers this season. Sharp on the ball with the ability to dribble and dictate the play, the son of Romania’s joint-record goalscorer would love to open his own account for his country this week.

One to watch for Germany: Serge Gnabry scored 14 goals in his first 17 appearances for Germany, while the Bayern Munich man has netted 46 goals in 121 games for Bayern Munich over the last three seasons. He’s well worth a look for the opening goal on Sunday.

Long shot: Think Romania can defy all logic and beat Germany 5-1 once again? That appears virtually impossible at 500/1, but a 5-1 win for Die Mannschaft could be on the cards at 55/1 in our Romania v Germany tips for this game.
